Wentworth finale leaves fans gasping (again)

Warning: Do not read until you have watched Season 7 finale “The Siege Part II”

Wentworth fans took to social media last night after a massive finale packed with big moves, and a final twist before the credits rolled.

Writer Pete McTighe told fans via Twitter the final reveal of Joan “The Freak” Ferguson (Pamela Rabe) had been a long time coming.

Fans were glowing with praise for the season finale which saw the death of Liz Birdsworth (Celia Ireland) at the hands of friend ‘Boomer’ (Katrina Milosevic), a birth for Vera Bennett (Kate Atkinson) and the deaths of Sean Brody (Rick Donald), Kosta (Artemis Ioannides) and May (Anni Finsterer).

The episode even drew upon a bit of Hollywood disguised hostages as the villains shuffled their way to a getaway chopper, and tragic mercy killing straight outta One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest -but we got great performances by Katrina Milosevic and Celia Ireland. This had been set in motion by Liz episodes earlier….

Meanwhile Rita Connors (Leah Purcell) went into protective custody and appears to have been released from the series, while the fate of Marie Winter (Susie Porter) should hopefully see her return.

But the episode, which at one point was expected to be the last, also changed its original ending after being renewed for 2 more seasons.

In May, series producer Pino Amenta told TV Tonight, “There was always a plan if it went ahead we would shoot the next 3 minutes of the last episode. Which is exactly what happened.”

Last December TV Tonight also asked Executive Producer Jo Porter if the renewal could see the return of Joan Ferguson, last sighted as dead bones?

“I’ve always said ‘I never saw the DNA report!’” she laughed.

“Some people keep telling me it’s all a dream and she will come alive again soon. But we’ve always tried to keep it earth within the rules of our world.”

Production is due to resume in October.

  1. From the weekly news letter by DK: “Would love to know how Wentworth was due to end before that ending was changed!”

We talked about that and my thoughts were: Vera has the baby and lives happily ever after maybe with Jake; Boomer and Lizzie scene still happens, Brodie dead same way it happened, Rita gets released and goes back into police work, The Freaks’ DNA is proven from the grave site (thus killing the idea that she is still alive and closes that story line once and for all); Marie goes to another prison; it ends with the women celebrating the closure of Marie, the drug dealings, the corruption of Sean, etc… they vote Ally for top dog!

  2. Also I felt some nods to Prisoner in the final ep. Vera Bennett gives birth in prison. Meg Jackson another senior and well liked officer had been born in Wentworth detention centre. Original Lizzie remembers Meg’s mother. Boomer’s mercy killing of Liz reminded me of Judy helping to end Hazell Kent’s life and the repercussions about euthanasia were ground breaking at the time. I vividly recall Belinda Davey pleading with Betty Bobbitt to kill her. The tenderness between them was also there in Wentworth finale with Celia and Katrina

      1. The women in the laundry under siege reminded me of the Ruth Ballinger climactic scenes when Gerard Kennedy and Robert Hughes shot Anne Phelan’s Myra Desmond dead and threatened to shoot one woman every hour.

  3. I thought it was one of the best hours (two counting part one last week) of drama I’ve seen in many a year. Celia Ireland needs to win an AACTA award for it and a second Logie. Katrina Milosoveic has her finest season yet, but overall I think 7 was not it’s best, probably among its weakest. Brody was not a well sketched character and Linda being forwarded didn’t add anything. Ruby had little to do, and the writing was sensationalist more than it was interesting but subplots with Liz and Boomer and the siege were fantastic so a mixed bag for me. But always unmissable tv. That final shot! Wtf

  4. That was the most intense episode of a tv show i have ever seen watched it twice last night and will again tonight I thought that the dead person would have been Kosta or Boomers mother

the Boomer and Liz scene was almost as sad as Mollys death on a country practice i hope Boomer doesn’t get to longer a sentence for it

definitely wasn’t expecting what looks like to be the freak resurfacing i wonder who dug her out and who the mummified corpse is I’m hoping it isn’t but I’m thinking it might be Maxine inside the box

  5. Oh my goodness, what an episode! It literally had everything!! I was bawling my eyes out with Boomer and Liz, screaming out ‘Shoot Her’ when Ally had the gun pointing at Marie and then left screaming “What The…” at that final scene…

I am so glad they renewed the show, although I would’ve been happy with the ending if that was going to be the end.

    1. Yes it’s still on ABC Thursday nights at around 11ish last weeks episode was season 5 episode 6 I don’t think they will be showing the latest season for a while though they still have the rest of season 5 to go and then season 6

  6. Magnificent final episode. It literally had everything, suspense, drama, pathos, incredible sadness and joy.It was one of the best hours of television I’ve ever seen.Bravo to everyone involved.

  7. Best 48 minutes of TV ever. Got my wife back into Wentworth after not watching for a while, at the end of the episode we needed time to digest and clam down, and will need to watch again. First time in a while we’ve watched live to air, normally recorded and watched next few days. Now planning to binge all 7 seasons together.

I still remember some of the big season enders on Prisoner and at the time was blown away but this is on another level. Counting down to May 2020 for season 8!

  8. That was an epic finale! So many brilliant performances…. although I’m kinda wishing that it was Bea instead of Joan.
Regardless, going to be one hell of a season next year.

    Bring it on.

  9. Such an incredible episode, so many unexpected moments! The Liz scenes from the moment she was found slumped in her cell to the when Boomer was pulled away from her was so emotional. I was certain the final scene was going to involve Rita either jumping from the car or being targeted, and boy was I wrong. I had my doubts about this season before it started, wondering where on earth could they go next, and they managed to pull it out of the bag. So glad Foxtel renewed this for another two seasons.

  10. I cried , I cheered and I was left with my mouth hanging open in amazement at the end…..but I should really not have been surprised.. wow Wentworth….. what an absolute ripper of a season final…can’t wait to see the next season but I will miss Celia Ireland and Leah Purcell.

    1. Rita will be back. Roo will be killed or something and it’ll drag her back in. We haven’t seen the last of Leah Purcell in Wentworth I reckon.

  11. I cried. I screamed. I gasped. I smiled. I “whooped” in certain parts. I was a “freak”-ing mess by the end of it.
Is there no scene more powerful and beautiful in any TV show I’ve watched this year than the one between Liz and Boomer? I was shook. Katrina and Celia were heartbreakingly mesmerising. Everyone in fact, everyone bought their A-game.
I’m in awe of everything about this show. I am just so proud it’s Australian. Because it eclipses any show I’ve watched this year yet again as my favourite series for 2019 so far. And I’ve watched a lot of TV 😉

  12. It was excellent, however… it must be said that a lot of plots across the seven series have been enabled by inmate uniforms with handy identity conceling hoods and a prison security camera system that can be hobbled with a sheet or a mop stick. Miss Bennett really needs to address those security flaws in the prison 🙂

    1. I always giggle at these two glaringly obvious points that enable such far fetched stories… but roll with just the same, because of the love I have for Wentworth.
