What I’ve Been Watching: Bridie McKim

Rising star of The Heights is a fan of Handmaid's Tale, Big Little Lies & The Office.

Bridie McKim who plays Sabine Rosso on ABC soap The Heights is a fan of Handmaid’s Tale, Big Little Lies & The Office.

Here’s what else she finds as essential viewing:

1. What’s on your Must See TV list lately and why?
It’s hard to narrow down my Must See TV list as there is so much good television being made at the moment. I think the most exciting show is The Handmaid’s Tale, it is both beautifully made and utterly gripping. Big Little Lies is an incredible show that has just come back with its second season. Also, The Letdown is hilariously raw and truthful.

2. What are your Guilty Pleasure shows?
My guilty pleasure shows are always ones that make me laugh. I am a sucker for them. If you can make me laugh then I am hooked. I love Offspring and Five Bedrooms which are really quirky and engaging, but they still manage to bring a tear to my eye. I have also binged both The Office and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. They have hilarious ensemble casts and manage to crack out the best one-liners I have ever heard.

3. What show you would secretly love to appear on?
To be honest, I would love to appear on The Handmaid’s Tale. I have this vision of coming in as a rouge handmaid. I would high five June, give Fred an earful and try to track down Nick’s phone number. My character probably wouldn’t last very long if I did all that in the conservative totalitarian society that is depicted in the show, but at least it would be a wild and very cathartic ride.

4. When you settle down for a night on the couch what are your ‘must-haves?’
When I sit down for a night on the couch I always have my dog, Poppy, curled up by my side. She is an 11-year-old Spoodle who is constantly desperate for hugs and is more of a breathing teddy bear than a dog. I love watching TV with my mum as she provides the best running commentary ever. (Her passion is probably what inspired me to work in film and television.) If it’s a Friday night then there is nothing better than indulging in a mini Magnum or a gin and tonic (if not both).

5. Tell us about filming The Heights and what can we look forward to with your character?
Filming The Heights was such an incredible experience. It was really special because the show is based around a community in an Australian suburb, so it really feels like the whole cast and crew are one big community when we film together. In the second half of season one we will see Sabine grappling with really confronting themes. She is put in situations that no woman should ever have to deal with. She is lucky that she has a great support system around her – especially with her mum Claudia and her best friend Mich – but she will still need to show a lot of strength when navigating challenging situations.

The Heights returns 8:30pm Friday on ABC.

  1. I stubbled across The Heights and found it quit good. I’m looking forward to part 2 shortly.
Bridie McKim is excellent in her roll as Sabine.

  2. A nice read. Looking forward to the return of The Heights. Watched season 1 on ABC iView when there was a lull in Aussie drama a few weeks back and it was better than I thought.
