Will Holey Moley be the next big thing?

It's mini-golf meets Ninja on US TV. And it's an Aussie format.

“Yes this is literally a mini-golf competition and yes it’s on primetime with an absurd budget,” says Rob Riggle of Holey Moley.

But what the co-host of ABC America’s new primetime contest hasn’t told you is that Holey Moley is an Australian-devised format.

The show, which is drawing up to 4.9m US viewers is produced by Eureka Productions (The Voice, The Chefs’ Line, Australian Spartan, Crikey! It’s the Irwins) and created by Chris Culvenor (MasterChef, Australia’s Next Top Model, The Biggest Loser). Also amongst its producing team are Paul Franklin and former Big Brother contestant-turned-producer Wes Dening.

As the video suggests the pimped mini-golf course comes with colourful obstacles, equally wild contestants and a host with his tongue firmly in his cheek. Think NinjaWipeout on a mini-golf course.

Holey Moley also just happens to be the name of a trendy social fad at bars across the country where cocktails and burgers are finished with a round of quirky, indoor putt-putt…. meaning there’s already an in-built audience.

If an Aussie network has its eye on this Seven would be the prime candidate, or 10 at a pinch. I reckon it’s way too close to Ninja / Lego to pique their interest.

Upfronts are coming next quarter, will Eureka’s show be on the list…? Put money on it.

  1. I watched a few clips on youtube the other day, and I feel that this is more of a watch-one-time, and that’s that. It might be great for our older generation who enjoy shows like this, but it’s likely not much interest will be served in the younger demos.

  2. Yes! This show looks hilarious and so much fun! People need to not be so serious 🙂
I love that is owns the ridiculousness of it too, good family viewing. Fingers crossed it happens here!

  3. I’ve yet to make it to Holy Moly in Perth because every time I’ve gone, it’s been packed out and we’ve not been able to get in but everyone raves about it and making a show out of it seems like a no brainer.

  4. “I reckon it’s way too close to Ninja / Lego to pique their interest”.

When has that ever stopped an Australian network? I’d make a list of all the copycat rip offs they’ve attempted over the years but there’s a 900 character limit for replies here.

  5. Love the tone of this! It feels very different to the other OTT physical formats like Ninja, Spartan or Titan Games. With the success of Lego Masters this would be the perfect fit for Nine.

  6. It’s a massive hit in the states with 10 million watching the first episode in the first week. That’s GOT-like numbers. My guess would be Seven pick it up.
