In the season final of Back Roads, Heather Ewart is in Nari Nari and Wiradjuri Country in the Riverina, NSW, to discover The Rainbow on the Plains, where a new breed of tourists is helping recharge the local economy.

Famously one of the flattest places on earth, the Hay Plains have sometimes been
considered dull, dusty and even “hell”! That doesn’t sound like a place where Heather
Ewart could find the tallest pub bar in the Southern Hemisphere.

In fact, the people of the plains are a fascinating bunch with an appropriately dry sense of humour. We’re sure you’ve heard the phrase “A horse walks into a bar …” Well, on the Hay Plains that could actually happen!

There’s a reason these watering-holes are so important. In its heyday, the plains were
teeming with thirsty jackaroos, roustabouts and drovers.

Most of this work has become mechanised and many jobs have disappeared completely. But Heather gets to meet two of the last of the breed – husband and wife Bimbo and Roz.

They’re also involved in the Hay Rodeo, which has been a fixture on the local calendar for more than 70 years. It’s a chance to show off some old-fashioned skills as well as some that continue to endure.

In the last couple of years, a newer tradition has become part of the mix – and it’s just as colourful as any rodeo. The Rainbow on the Plains – the Hay Mardi Gras – has been life-changing for many locals. It’s also attracted a new breed of tourists, who are helping recharge the local economy.

One fine institution has managed to chronicle the many changes. Despite the closure of country newspapers across the land, the tiny Hillston Spectator has managed to buck the trend and keep the locals up to date – even if their equipment is a little outdated.

8pm Monday on ABC.
