Broadcasters forge deal with Facebook

Networks producing news content for mobile audiences on Facebook.

Networks have forged deals for news to be published through Facebook.

7News has created ‘The Latest on Facebook Watch’ – a daily news show hosted by Michael Usher, produced in a brand-new purpose built studio.

Seven Network Director of News and Public Affairs, Craig McPherson, said: “7NEWS will provide a high quality service to Facebook which I’m sure will be mutually beneficial. It’s great for original content makers to now get revenue for our product from Facebook and we look forward to furnishing a profitable ongoing relationship.”

SKY News also announced a bespoke program “Unpacked” but will no longer make its video content available on Twitter.

Paul Whittaker, Chief Executive, Sky News said: “Our partnerships with YouTube, Microsoft News, Facebook and Taboola are an important first step, a long time in the making and with still a long way to go, to monetise our trusted news content on digital platforms ensuring continued investment and focus on local journalism.

“The digital content agreements will deliver increased reach for our premium news and introduce new audiences to the award-winning content available across the full suite of SKY News channels on Foxtel.”

Nine, 10 and SBS will also produce content for Facebook.

  1. my guess is tv networks are doing this because they see its best to partner with a behemoth like Facebook and Google rather than fight it. I think they hope to get a slice of the revenue that those two Tech Giants are getting. Not a bad idea, the question is how successful will it be?

  2. SKY News Unpacked sounds like those News and Weather “broadcasts” you get at Petrol Stations when you pull in to fill-up on those screens above the pumps, which I wish I could turn the noise off while filling up. Though I guess these services will dig deeper than those on loop ones, makes a bit of sense with them trying to engage the younger demographic and how they watch things, after all it is what the bigger companies are doing now. Even Vince McMahon has taken his WWE product to Facebook Watch with an exclusive show on there even though he has his own streaming app, so not surprising others are taking this route to attract the under 25’s or so (a few are also turning to Twitch TV).

  3. I permanently deleted my Facebook account 18 months ago and have never regretted it, my mind is far less cluttered. I now get all my online news from the ABC News app, a source I trust implicitly.

  4. i saw promos on 9 last night for 9NEWS Watch hosted by Sylvia Jefferies, obviously no press release went out for you to be able to mention it. Apparently launched last night at 8pm on 9’s website and facebook pages. Although i never saw it.
