Local series get Chinese and Arabic subtitles from SBS

The Hunting & Untold Australia reworked for Chinese and Arabic viewers at SBS On Demand.

Two local SBS commissions, drama series The Hunting and documentary series Untold Australia are now available with Chinese and Arabic subtitles at SBS On Demand.

Mandi Wicks, SBS Director of Audio and Language Content, said: “SBS is the world’s most linguistically diverse public broadcaster, providing services in 68 languages to the nearly five million Australians who speak a language other than English at home.

“Audiences come to SBS for unique stories they can’t find elsewhere. Our ongoing commitment to subtitling focuses on expanding the accessibility of this local content to enable multicultural communities to gain a deeper understanding of issues and experiences affecting all Australians.”

Early this year, SBS launched the Chinese and Arabic Collections featuring a range of diverse dramas, documentaries and current affairs programs.

Titles featured in the Chinese Collection include crime drama Dead Lucky, documentary series exploring mental illness, How ‘Mad’ Are You?, female-led boxing drama On The Ropes, a search for Australia’s brightest child in Child Genius and a look at the truth about sexism in Australia, Is Australia Sexist? and international award-winning drama series The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3. In addition, the collection also includes a selection of episodes of SBS’s award-winning first person current affairs program Insight.

The Arabic Collection also features On The Ropes, and How ‘Mad’ Are You?, alongside Logie award winning documentary, First Contact (season two) and a selection of episodes of international currents affairs program Dateline.

  1. It’s also likely that these series have been sold internationally and the subtitles have just been brought here, I suppose, to test the waters to see whether there is an audience for English-language content with non-English subtitles.
