Regional broadcaster NBN has upgraded 9GEM to HD for Northern New South Wales and the Gold Coast -just in time for tonight’s Ashes series.
9GEM is transmitted using the MPEG4 format for better picture quality. Some older televisions may have difficulty receiving the MPEG4 format.
A channel rescan may be required for some sets. Nine advises if you can receive the Nine HD on channel 80 service now, you will be able to receive GemHD. AÂ standard definition 9GEM will still be available on Channel 82 for others.
NBN:
Nine Channel 8 (SD)
NineHD Channel 80 (HD)
Nine Channel 81 (SD)
9Gem Channel 82 (SD)
9GO! Channel 83 (SD)
9Life Channel 84 (SD)
9GemHD Channel 85 (HD)
9GO! Channel 88 (SD)

Not sure why 9 still airs 9Go on two channels – could probably save a bit of bandwidth by just having it on channel 83/93.
It doesn’t eat up any extra bandwidth, they just have two logical channel numbers (LCNs) pointing to the same video and audio streams (PIDs).
Any idea if Southern Cross will do the same with their 9Gem channel? Having to watch the Ashes in SD in 2019 is a joke.
Sorry nothing I am aware of.
Thanks David. I have reset my Topfields.
