10 has signalled its interest in pursuing Free to Air TV rights for the NRL.
CEO Paul Anderson has told The Australian, “Major sports remain a part of our long term strategy — we have been a significant player in the past and there is no reason why this will change as attractive future rights become available.
“Network 10 is part of a global media company that has a significant sporting legacy with franchises that are a very important part of their network.”
Current FTA rights, which lay with Nine, expire in 2022 and negotiations are tipped to begin next year. Foxtel has Pay TV rights for its FOX League channel.
The existing deal was worth over $2 billion, with the ARL Commission paying clubs more than $13 million apiece each season.

Network 10 need a major sport in winter, they don’t have to get all of it but a couple of games per week ideally both night games would be perfect. if they could do a similair deal that Nine Entertainment did where they acquired digital streaming rights to there games that would be the key also they need subscription rights aswell , so they can add extra revenue and offer a reason to subscribe to 10 All Access. I know Foxtel will be annoyed but i think it TEN bid jhigh enough they will get it. Also TEN need to utillise CBS Sports HQ content for 10 All Access.
May have some chance as ratings very ordinary may not cost that much. Could be same as tennis and Cricket rights were they made loses.
While you are absolutely right – the ratings have been very ordinary, I still think they will want to retain as much live sport as they can. It’s about the only way to get the advertising dollars these days.
Wouldn’t be surprising if CBS had reviewed the Aus FTA landscape and told Ten to get its hands on a big sport at any price.
Victorians especially are great watchers. Compare Melbourne to Sydney, and Melbourne has a greater audience for virtually every program. The 5 city metro ratings however are a little skewed, and with NSW and Qld having over 50% of the population and advertising revenue, the NRL is easily the highest rating football code in these states, and it’s unlikely 10 would get them for a bargain basement price.
I would rather a bid for AFL/AFLW rights. (both current rights expire in 2022)
Imagine how much 10 will get if CBS really gets involved.
1. 10 need to fix up Saturday Nights. They desperately need sport. AFL rates much higher than NRL nationally and they need a sport that is viable. Network 10 really needs to win back ratings. At the moment, Nine’s NRL ratings have hit new lows.
2. For the clocks, use the count-up timer. Count-up timer will make it more consistent than the 5-min warning (in case if it’s a lopsided game)
3. I want better commentators on 10 that could focus on the game.
They had Live sport available on Saturday night just gone – The Wallabies game – they buried it on Bold.
Ten would do a good job with the NRL in my view. Nine has had it for a long time but l feel it needs a new home. If Ten get it then they should air it on Bold. Leave 10 for the it’s general entertainment audience.
Yeah, I’m sure rugby league fans would love watching the greatest game of all in SD.
Ten getting the rights would be good as long as they got the commentary team right. No Vautin or Gould for a start.
Ten can upgrade but why do it when they don’t have to. 4k will be the next technology so migrate straight to that.
You mean that 5% share it has on Saturday’s?
Currently has!
They really need this
