Airdate: Storm in a Teacup

Artist Leon Pericles faces his greatest challenge: holding an exhibition while Alzheimer’s disease afflicts his wife and collaborator, Moira.

ABC screens the documentary Storm in a Teacup, in which Australian artist Leon Pericles faces his greatest challenge: holding an exhibition of his life’s works as Alzheimer’s disease afflicts his wife and collaborator, Moira.

Storm in a Teacup is an intimate portrait of renowned Western Australian Artist Leon Pericles as he embarks on his biggest challenge yet – a retrospective exhibition of his life’s works, whilst witnessing the increasing mental decline of his wife and collaborator, Moira as Alzheimer’s disease turns their world upside down.

A master painter and printmaker, Pericles’ work is held in all Australian state galleries, the National Gallery and private collections around the world. But he would never have achieved this level of success without his greatest supporter by his side.

Leon and Moira were the ultimate team; partners in life and art and the phrase ‘behind every great man is a great woman’ could not be more fitting.

Told through the eyes of their daughter Nia, this uplifting, raw and emotionally engaging documentary explores love, life and loss. Rather than shed dementia in a depressing light, Storm in a Teacup is playful, funny and a story many will relate to.

9:30pm Tuesday September 17 on ABC.
