Chopper vision misidentified on Today

Pooled helicopter vision of Peregian Springs fires was broadcast as Binna Burra fires on Today.

“Welcome back to Today. You’re seeing Live pictures of Binna Burra…..,” Ben Fordham told Today show viewers last Tuesday morning.

“We’re seeing firefighters dropping water on blazes burning there.”

But when the Today show was screening chopper vision of bushfires at 8:43am, it was not Binna Burra, but Peregian Springs fires.

Vision from the same helicopter was also screening on Sunrise last Tuesday, as part of pooled vision arrangements.

While Nine’s reporters on the ground were giving accurate information near Peregian Springs, back at Today‘s Sydney production, helicopter vision was misidentified during its final half-hour last Tuesday.

At 8:52am Georgie Gardner said, “We’re bringing you Live pictures now of Binna Burra in Queensland.”

A Nine spokesperson told TV Tonight, “All on-ground vision was supered correctly. Jessica Millward was the only reporter in the exclusion zone at Peregian Springs and the vision we had was live through the morning.

“At no point during Today’s broadcast did our reporters give any false information about any fire situation in any location. No resident in any area we showed vision or had on-ground reporters were given false information about a critical emergency.”
