Man allegedly posing as TV exec faces court

A man allegedly posed as a television executive, promising a teenager an acting role, a court has heard.

A man who allegedly posed as a television executive and harassed a teenage girl faced a Sydney court yesterday.

Gerard Vamadevan, 51, appeared in Sutherland Local Court in Sydney’s south yesterday charged with using carriage service to menace / harass / offend.

Police documents allege the man posed as a slick “television industry talent scout” when he approached a 17-year-old girl in March, promising to get her an acting role on television.

When she asked if she could bring her parents to a meeting he bombarded her and her family with more than 300 threatening and abusive calls and messages, police alleged.

Police allege the man made contact with the teen 125 times and one of her family members 196 times over the course of just a few hours on April 2.

“The defendant didn’t achieve his ultimate aim of meeting with victim. It was only the victim’s smarts and self preservation that stopped more serious charges,” the court heard.

He did not enter a plea, was denied bail and will face court again on 17 September.
