News Corp backs Carrie Bickmore story on Today

News Corp is standing by its report which suggested Carrie Bickmore and Karl Stefanovic were under consideration for the Today show.

Nine’s news boss Darren Wick issued a statement on the weekend claiming the article was “made-up.”

“Nine has not approached, and does not intend to approach, Carrie Bickmore or her representatives about joining Nine as a host of the Today Show, nor in any other role,” he said.

“Carrie is an outstanding broadcaster and an inspirational person. She’s terrific. But she does not factor in our plans for the future.”

But News Corp has further responded today with a spokesperson saying, “As many people in the media know, approaches to talent are often made in ways that can be plausibly denied.

“The Sunday Telegraph stands by its report that an approach to Carrie Bickmore was made.”

Nine’s statement made no comment on the suggestion of Karl Stefanovic rejoining the show, which has been speculative chatter for some time.

Nine declined to add further comment today.

  1. I actually would like this to be true. But Carrie’s just had a baby so can’t imagine she’d be too keen to be getting up at 3.00 every day to do morning TV.

  2. Karl needs to focus on what he is good at, journalism. his sense of humour is to immature for him to “host” anything. I don’t think Karl would work on the project. they (besides Peter Hellier) have a dream team cast and the show works well because of it. Karl should host something like A Current Affair. Maybe that’s where 10 could put him if they pouched him, his own public affairs program

    Carrie would be a good fit for today, if she is given the right team to work with

  3. I was only discussing with friends a few months ago about perhaps Ten should have pouched Karl for The Project.
    I think this line up will very much work.
    Didn’t the ratings on Today begin the decline when Georgie took over Lisa Wilkinson?
    Georgie Gardner is great when she’s reading the news, I don’t think she has the demeanour for breakfast TV and two years on I think the verdict is in.
    Something has to give at the Today show soon. I don’t think Nine will give it another year with the present line up.
    However, it really should be Ten bringing Karl across for The Project. Missed opportunity.
