Oops. Gruen return out of sync.

Updated: "It was a dodgy machine at the ABC."

ABC’s return of Gruen has been plagued by an audio sync problem.

Gruen is filmed the day before broadcast and not delivered until very late in the day due to the overnight edit and audio turnaround.

CIZ sources tell TV Tonight the show is played out from ABC in Sydney, where the glitch lay, rather than the Media Hub facility.

It wasn’t possible to reset the show during the telecast because there isn’t a break in the show.

The iview version is correct and the broadcast version will be fixed for the repeat on ABC and for Gruen XL on ABC Comedy on Friday night.

An ABC Spokesperson said, “The ABC apologies for the synching issue on last night’s episode of Gruen. The issue was rectified in time for Western Australia viewers, and the episode was made available on ABC iview last night without the error.”

Gruen team:

After 11 years roasting brands for their stuff-ups, we’ve had one of our own. Serves us right. Apologies to anyone annoyed by the audio sync on last night’s broadcast. We’d say it was an elaborate test to check if you were paying attention, but our lovely, loyal and hardworking Gruen team were pretty disappointed too. We were so excited to show you that episode.

As with every blunder, it’s best when there’s something to blame. In this case: it was a dodgy machine at the ABC. But we probably shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds us or next season our panellists will be forced to sing and dance in masks. The machine has received a severe talking to from a loud and very much in sync voice.

For anyone that couldn’t persevere last night, the fixed episode is up on iView now. If you prefer late and oddly specific timeslots ending in five, it airs again at 11:05pm tomorrow or 10:25pm Sunday on ABC TV. Or there’s always our supersized version Gruen XL, on tomorrow at 8:30pm on ABC Comedy. We’re told the audio will be airing at the same time as the video.

We hope you’ll tune into the show next week. Even just to see whether or not we tackle our own PR fail. Same time. Same place. Better sound*.

*Hopefully. Never over-promise in advertising.

Frustrated viewers have taken to social media to complain over the issue around ABC’s most popular show.

It follows ABC recently playing the wrong episode of Mad as Hell blamed on a Media Hub playout.

It’s not clear if the issue is affecting all states.

  1. Gruen is not the only one, WIN news the local Tasmanian edition out of NSW appears to be out of sync with the close ups of the reader, maybe a couple of of frames. I used to be a projectionist so this type of thing really annoys me.

  2. Also a big editing error during The Pitch in this episode.

As the panel was giving their verdict for the best advert, one of cutaways to the ad agency reps (after Russell gave his verdict), revealed the lady on the left with the award already in her lap. This was way before it was actually awarded to her. lol.

  3. Here in Melbourne, it looked to be about 2 frames out of sync. Maybe the sync problem was the cause of Wil Anderson’s hair going into a cartoonish vertical shock-reaction style.

  4. Yes, it’s really annoying (and I went to twitter too!) Mistakes happen, but why can’t they fix it. It was only a month or so ago that MAH played out the wrong episode (also Wednesday 8:30pm slot)
