UK rethinks approach to Eurovision

UK ditches You Decide national final, as it partners wth BMG.

The United Kingdom is changing tactics for Eurovision in 2020 after BBC announced a partnership with music label BMG.

The UK is still one of the major underwriters of the event yet has struggled to cut through in recent years with performers including SuRie, Lucie Jones, Electro Velvet, Engelbert Humperdinck and Bonnie Tyler. Some such as Michael Rice have languished in last place.

BBC Studios approached a number of record labels to pitch ideas for 2020, and said BMG shared their vision of selecting a song with broad international appeal and securing an artist who embodies the spirit and values of Eurovision.

The move will mean an end to Eurovision: You Decide in which the public have chosen several talent show acts to represent them.

Kate Phillips, Controller Entertainment Commissioning for the BBC, says: “Our commitment to finding the right song has never been higher and this collaboration with BMG, who have access to world class songwriters, is a genuinely exciting prospect and I am certain that together we can find the best song and artist possible for 2020.”

Mel Balac, Creative Director for BBC Studios, says: “The Eurovision Song Contest is a huge global event and our collaboration with BMG marks an important turning point for the UK at Eurovision. We very much hope this marks the start of an exciting new chapter.”

    1. The only change of approach should be pulling out of this show. Oh don’t worry about us Brits voting, we got the most important vote correct when we voted Leave in 2016.
