Vale: Mick Millett

ABC Director of Corporate Affairs, who has been an integral member of the leadership team, has died.

ABC Director of Corporate Affairs Michael Millett has died aged 60, following a battle with cancer.

He joined ABC in 2009 as director of communications and had a long career in print media.

Yesterday ABC managing director David Anderson issued a statement on behalf of the broadcaster:

The ABC is enormously sad at the death of our friend and colleague, Michael Millett. Mick had been very sick for some time, and he died early this morning.

On behalf of everyone at the ABC, I extend our most heartfelt condolences to Mick’s wife Debra, his children Dylan and Shayne, and all of his family and friends. We are so very sorry for your loss.

Mick was a truly remarkable man, and an important and influential figure in the Australian media, and I know accolades and remembrances will flow for him today.

He was a friend and mentor to many journalists who respected him for leading by example. Mick never took a backward step.

His long and highly distinguished career began in print journalism as a cadet on the Melbourne Herald. He went on to work for The Sydney Morning Herald for 20 years, many spent as a political correspondent in the Canberra press gallery, also serving as North Asia Correspondent and becoming Deputy Editor.

He joined the ABC as Director of Communications in February 2009 and has been an integral member of the leadership team ever since.

He remained a reporter at heart, and he came from a generation of journalists who held sacred the values of truth and accountability. He was tireless in his defence of public broadcasting and the rights of journalists everywhere.

I would particularly like to acknowledge his role as an invaluable supporter and advisor to three ABC Managing Directors: firstly Mark Scott, who was also his very dear friend, and then Michelle Guthrie and myself.

Mick is unforgettable, and irreplaceable. He will be deeply missed.
