10 statement: “No offence intended” after Kerri-Anne “speed bump” comments

"Her words were clearly a joke," says 10. But KAK is "Not sorry" for her comments.

Network 10 has issued a statement after comments by Kerri-Anne Kennerley on Studio 10 directed at Extinction Rebellion protestors.

It’s the second time she has dismissed their protests.

This week dozens of people have been arrested for blocking roads, and one man was arrested after he suspended himself from Brisbane’s Story Bridge. There were 56 arrests in Melbourne on Tuesday, according to Extinction Rebellion, and more than 40 people have been arrested in Sydney so far.

“Personally, I would leave them all super glued to wherever they do it,” she said.

“The guy hanging from the Story Bridge. Why send emergency services? Leave him there until he gets himself out. No emergency services should help them, nobody should do anything, and you just put little witches hats around them, or use them as a speedbump.”

Sarah Harris attempted to hose it down saying, “Oh, we’re going to get into trouble!”

KAK later added, “Put them in jail, forget to feed them!”

Her comments quickly lit up social media.

A 10 spokesperson said in a statement:

“This morning on Studio 10 Kerri-Anne Kennerley made comments regarding climate protesters that were said in jest.

“Before the show concluded, Sarah Harris reiterated the tone of her remarks, affirming that Kerri-Anne wasn’t inciting violence.

“Kerri-Anne confirmed that she was indeed speaking in hyperbole and her words were clearly a joke. There was no intent to cause offence.

“Over the past few days, Studio 10 has extensively addressed a range of opinions on this subject.”

But KAK told Ben Fordham she was not sorry for her remarks.

Extinction Rebellion spokesman James Norman told news.com.au “I would just point out Extinction Rebellion is a peaceful, non-violent organisation at the centre of all our tactics and messaging.”

Studio 10 was recently cleared of an ACMA investigation following comments instigated by KAK around Australia Day.

  1. KAK made a comment and many got hostile towards her for that comment. I think the real issue is, people aren’t allowed to have a differing view without the majority getting violent themselves over the differing view of another person. You can’t expect to change someones mind about something if all you end up doing is getting hostile towards them. Learn to have a civil debate and embrace the so called democracy we have here.

  2. Pay attention – this is all part of a desperate tactic by KAK to remain relevant and gain attention at a time when she feared she was about to be dumped from TV. She is a fighter who will do anything to remain in the public eye and make it into the headlines – even if she has to spout garbage like this. She has plans, either to end up back on commercial radio as a shock jock, or to get her own show on the rancid Sky. Having worked with her in the past, never underestimate KAK. She is up to something.

  4. Well done KAK for expressing your opinion and livening up what are often dull, cheesey mornings on TV. Should we be more like socialist China and advocate firm police and military force against the fringe dwellers who have hijacked, what is otherwise a worthwhile cause of our young people?

  5. I really don’t think people are any more easily offended than they were in the past. With social media and blogs like this now, people have a bigger voice and boy, are they expressing it. This is a good thing as in the past, media stars could get away with a lot more. If you disagreed all you could do is ring the station or write a letter to the editor. Kerrie_anne needs to be careful as what she is doing is deliberate in my opinion. She is smart and knows how the media works and knows how to make things go viral. The whole thing could backfire with sponsors pulling out like they did with Alan Jones.

  6. What happened to the Kerri-Anne that used to be on Midday & Mornings with Kerri-Anne? She wasn’t nasty like this back then. I used to really like her but she’s become very nasty lately.

    2. The format of those shows didn’t give her the opportunity to express her opinion. Now she’s on a panel type show discussing “hot topics” she’s off the leash.

  7. It’s not her comments about the protesters that annoyed me, because clearly she was speaking tongue in cheek. However her dismissal of climate change as a load of rubbish is laughable. It’s okay for people of her age, they won’t be around to suffer the catastrophic consequences.

    1. Was she dismissing it as a load of rubbish? It wasn’t her comments about the protesters that was at fault but the misguided suggestion of possible violence against them. Regardless of how people view climate issues, tolerance of the protesters will wear thin if the aim is to continue to catastrophise the issue and call for “action” without any idea or suggestion of what that action should be.

    1. We all agree with her in principle. The protesters are just trolls who have nothing to do and all day to do it in. They also have nothing to lose.

      Their protests will be greeted by politicians in the same way as taxi drivers protesting about Uber. Largely ignored.

  10. Very poignant that Sarah Harris was left to set the record straight at the end of the show, affirming that KAK wasn’t inciting violence. That end of show wrap should have come from KAK herself. It did not.

  11. Can’t we just disagree with people without threatening violence or injury. I don’t like half the stuff Alan Jones says but I don’t go and threat violence or harm to him.

  13. You’re entitled to your opinion KAK. So is everyone else in this world. We don’t have to agree with what anyone says, but we must be respectful of that opinion!

  14. Who cares if the comments “lit up social media”? Is that the basis of a news story? No wonder people are switching off lamestream media in droves. Freedom of speech. Move on

  15. Given that this isn’t the first time, I don’t think this is a joke. She just doesn’t want to admit on 10 that this is what she thinks because she knows there will be backlash.

  16. How stupid do they think their target audience are that they cannot distinguish between what is literal and what is hyperbolic?

    It’s difficult to take these protesters seriously when they are being so disruptive of everyday people, causing an abundance of environmental damage in their so-called efforts against environmental damage, and burdening the taxpayer with their misdirected indignation.

    When it comes to matters such as these, KAK implores those passionate about a cause to get off their backsides and do something about it. Being a public nuisance (and by extension expense) does more harm to a cause than good.

    1. Well put. I can’t wait for these protestors to tire of this inane, impotent screaming and yelling at the sky. What are they achieving except shutting down city streets and causing trouble to people going about their business. They should scream and yell in front of the Chinese embassy who along with India, Russia, Japan and the US contribute half the worlds carbon emissions but have little to no interest in curbing it.

      1. Who gives a flying f*** if other countries are emitting more, we should still be doing as much as we can to cut our own emissions. Maybe it won’t make a difference but maybe it will. Maybe it will set an example for other countries to follow. Maybe cleaning up the environment should be reason enough on its own, even without the benefit of potentially staving off an extinction event.

        1. Not just more, a helluva lot more…a handful of countries putting half the worlds carbon emissions in the air is something. Australia wont be the shining light changing the ways of China, India, Russia and USA it’s just a cold hard fact. In the meantime, we have hoards of people just causing chaos in our cities for no real benefit. And the thing is they won’t keep it up for much longer it just isn’t something people will keep doing and getting away with. Especially when it’s a stand against something that won’t change no matter how much yelling they do. Just my opinion.

            If other countries are polluting a helluva lot more, maybe our pollies could engage in affirmative action here and then do a diplomacy and talk to the other nations and push for them do to something too. These protests are taking place all over the world and it’s not just because of inaction in those specific countries it’s because *nobody* is doing enough. Politicians doing things in their own countries would be great, but the *next* step is to band together and convince other countries to do something too.

      1. It’s only offensive if people are offended. Unfortunately society has become quite precious and lost it’s sense of humor along with taking things far too literally.

          1. Maybe don’t blame people for being offended at people being offended when someone says they’re offended?

      1. Actually it’s a fine line for example I could refer to you as “an idiot” and maybe because you are having a bad day or whatever to blow it out of proportion if you get my drift
