ABC has announced a free global version of iview which will showcase news and current affairs content to audiences overseas on iOS and Android.
Titles will include Q&A, Four Corners, Insiders, Media Watch, Foreign Correspondent, The Drum, Australian Story, BTN, Gardening Australia, Back Roads, along with curated documentary, lifestyle and entertainment content such as Waltzing the Dragon and triple j’s One Night Stand.
ABC Chair Ita Buttrose said: “International broadcasting is one of the ABC’s bedrock Charter responsibilities. The availability of ABC Australia iview will open up a variety of outstanding Australian content to audiences around the world, as well as to the more than 1 million Australian expats who live, work or are travelling overseas.”
The move comes after the Morrison government announced a multi-million dollar deal to have Australian TV shows screening to Pacific island audiences through Free TV Australia, and ABC yet to fulfill a promise for iview in HD by 2017.
The app can be downloaded outside Australia only through Google Play and the App Store.

I wish BBC IPlayer was free to us here in Australia or even by subscription.
So how long does the AFL (in 2019 showing 5 games a week) last on ABC Australia? About as long as the Marngrook Footy Show on SBS, I’d guess…..
Good to know, as ABC has recently blocked my VPN.
Well done ABC Australia!
We really need HD iView. Killing Eve S2 is on iView, but I bought it on Google Play so I could have decent picture quality on a 65″ TV.
Will it apply to the website as well? Only iOS and Android is being mentioned here, but surely it’d be silly if the apps can be downloaded overseas but the website cannot be accessed.
Does the standard current Iview app work while going overseas?
No.
Is it free to overseas audiences.
Yes.
