Airdate: Shark Week 2019

Discovery's annual action stunt returns in early December.

It’s still some time off but Discovery has now confirmed Shark Week is returning from Thursday 5 December.

The annual 24/7 takeover includes 16 hours of premiere shows.

Not only is Shark Week the best week of the year, it’s also one of the most important as it raises awareness about the increasing threats faced by our ocean’s greatest predator at the hands of humans and the environment. Now in its 25th year in Australia, the event also highlights recent developments in shark science and reveals remarkable new insight into these magnificent and misunderstood creatures.

This year, the pop culture phenomenon takes viewers to oceans across the planet as nearly two dozen of the world’s most respected marine biologists, experts and science institutions deliver new groundbreaking shark stories and embark on the most daring shark experiments ever attempted in search of compelling insight into the mysterious world of sharks. We even discover a new hunting ground off the coast of South Africa and witness the dramatic battles between predator and prey.

2019 also sees Shark Week’s first scripted feature-length film, Capsized: Blood in the Water, a true story about a 1982 shark encounter starring Josh Duhamel; and we head on the ultimate Shark Trip as actor, comedian and retired Marine Rob Riggle packs his bags for a shark-filled adventure with some of his celebrity friends including Anthony Anderson, Adam Devine, Joel McHale, and Damon Wayans Jr.

This huge week launches with Sharks of the Badlands where white sharks are infiltrating the waters off Cape Cod, Massachusetts and one attack recently turned fatal. Can cutting-edge shark detecting technology tested in New Zealand make the water at Cape Cod safe again? Australian shark attack survivor turned shark expert, Paul de Gelder is back in the Shark Week seat for Shark Trip: Eat. Prey. Chum with Rob Riggle and his mates and Laws of Jaws: Dangerous Waters where he and a team of experts reenact five recent shark attacks to examine how things could have ended differently. Despite last year saying he’d never do it again, Paul has another shot at the ultimate 48-hour survival experiment in Sharkwrecked: Crash Landing where he and James Glancy experience first-hand what it’s like to crash land into some of the world’s most remote and shark infested waters.

Don’t miss the third ‘Isle of Jaws’ instalment Isle of Jaws: Blood Brothers which returns to a remote island off Western Australia to study two great white males, believed to be brothers. While The Sharks of Headstone Hell heads to Norfolk Island, the gathering spot of some of the largest tiger sharks on Earth, to examine whether human practices are altering the sharks’ behaviour.

The action doesn’t stop there. In Extinct or Alive: The Lost Shark, wildlife biologist Forrest Galente rediscovers the rare Pondicherry shark – thought to be extinct since the 1970s; a team of experts led by Dr Yannis Papastamatiou and marine biologist Melissa Marquez set out to record never before seen white shark hunting behaviours in Great White Kill Zone: Guadalupe; and in Andrew Mayne: Ghost Diver, the master illusionist, author and inventor attempts to create the first-of-its-kind shark suit to overcome the senses of a great white and make him invisible to the world’s most perfect predator. Discovery is at the forefront of promoting the ongoing conservation and protection of sharks and supporting shark science. Each year we work with some of the world’s most respected scientists, researchers and science institutions for Shark Week to reveal recent breakthroughs and developments that uncover fascinating new findings about these species, so that we humans can understand sharks more, educate those around us and appreciate the vital role they play in the ecosystem.
