CBS & Viacom to merge by December

Are changes ahead for 10 as parent company sharholders agree to merger

The US$30b merger of CBS and Viacom is expected to be completed by early December after it was approved by US shareholders.

A merge has been on the cards for several months.

National Amusements, the Redstone family-controlled media company that has majority stakes in both CBS and Viacom, gave the green light to the merger earlier this week, while the US Securities and Exchange Commission approved it late last week.

The merger will see CBS, Showtime and CBS All Access combined with Viacom’s cable channels, which include Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and BET, as well as its movie studio Paramount Pictures.

CBS’s other assets include The CW, its US network joint venture with Warner Bros Entertainment, plus Network 10 in Australia, CBS Television Studios, CBS Global Distribution Group, Pop and Smithsonian.

Viacom also owns Channel 5 in the UK, Telefe in Argentina and Colors in India, the latter via its partnership with TV18, as well as AVoD service Pluto TV.

It’s not clear what changes it will have on Network 10.

  1. Hopefully we might be seeing more Nickelodeon and MTV shows on Peach & Bold? Hopefully doesn’t impact the main channel too much, maybe an added show here and there, though it will hopefully not mean to much change over here.

  2. Channel 10 really should take full advantage of all of this if at all applicable. By opening up the library to more titles, this could be what separates them from the other fodder.
