Guinness World Records recently announced it will partner with Banijay Group for a primetime family entertainment show format.

The format has already been produced by Banijay Group’s Magnolia in Italy as five-part series, La Notte Dei Record, which premiered on TV8 in 2018.

The year-long deal will span 15 key markets including UK/Eire, USA, Australia and Germany.

The studio format features record-breaking contenders going head-to-head in challenges as well as established record-holders vying to break their own world bests, all under the watch of the official adjudicator.

Karen Gilchrist, Guinness World Records’ Director of Visual Content commented: “Just like our book, record-breaking has broad family appeal, making it perfect appointment-to-view entertainment. Banijay’s contemporary approach to programme making and their in-depth market knowledge makes them the perfect partner for this project and we’re really looking forward to working together”

Carlotta Rossi Spencer, SVP, Format Acquisitions, Banijay Group add: “The partnership with TGWR was a no brainer. With a brand that resonates worldwide, a format that is both scalable and hugely versatile, and an incredibly well-established audience and fan-base, the potential for a collaboration was obvious. Already we’ve seen the show perform well in Italy and are now looking forward to travelling it further across our footprint.”

No broadcasters have been confirmed for the show in Australia, expected to be produced by Screentime.

  1. Maybe close to the Federal Election PM Scott Morrison can go on and try beat the sculling of a yard glass record seeing he likes to bend the elbow. Either him or Anthony Albanese, who could do it to try and win back Labor’s grass roots voters.

    1. Yes, it seems that there was also Guiness World Records that was hosted by Grant Denyer and Shelley Craft on Seven. I think Guinness Primetime, which was an American import was on Ten if my vague memory is correct, but I could be wrong.

  2. This wouldn’t be the first involvement in television for Guinness. There was a show in the late 90s/early 00s called Guinness Primetime, though I think it featured only the record breaking attempts.

I had liked the Guinness books in the past, but in recent times, many of the world record breaking attempts had become silly and obscure. Attempts that showed talent, yet no one else would think of just for the sake of breaking the records and maintaining them. It used to be mainly interesting things like ‘world’s tallest person’, but now it includes attempts like ‘most apples crushed with a bicep’.

    1. If you have Foxtel, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’s recent episode about the leader of Turkmenistan had a segment about the Guinness World Records. He highlighted how dictators of various countries around the world will pay Guinness to invent records that they can claim. Such as building a big white marble horse statue, then inventing and claiming the record for biggest white marble horse statue. Worth a watch if you’re interested.
