HBO abandons one Game of Thrones prequel, but orders another.

Updated: Pilot prequel starring Naomi Watts gets the thumbs down but another goes straight to series.

Well this is not what we wanted to hear.

HBO is not proceeding with its planned Game of Thrones prequel starring Naomi Watts.

That’s despite an untitled pilot being filmed (bow-bowwwww).

The project was set to take place thousands of years prior to the events of the original series.

Jane Goldman co-created the project with George R.R. Martin, and the cast also included Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, Toby Regbo, Miranda Richardson, Marquis Rodriquez, John Simm, Richard McCabe, John Heffernan, and Dixie Egerickx.

The pilot was one of several that were put into development at HBO prior to the end of the series.
However, it was reported in September that HBO was nearing a pilot commitment for a project based on based on companion book “Fire & Blood.”

Updated: HBO has announced a straight to to series order for a prequel series in the world of Westeros called House of the Dragon.

The rumored series is focused on House Targaryen and created by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal (Colony) was given a formal series order on Tuesday at the end of HBO Max’ formal unveiling to investors. Condal will pen the script for the 10-episode series.

  1. HBO ruled out doing a direct sequels two years ago. They have done development on 5 different Westeros shows with no direct connection to A Song of Ice and Fire, which is over and done and nobody wanted to do more, not Benioff and Weiss or the cast.

The reason you do a pilot is to see how it works, GOT was piloted. They have blown the budget for the Bloodmoon pilot (though it might end up being released sometime) but saved 9 times that by not ordering it to series. Most pilots aren’t ordered to series.

Instead they have they have given a 10 ep series order to House of Dragons, about House Targaryen 300 years before A Song Of Ice And Fire, based on Fire & Blood (some junk about Westeros’s History Martin’s publishers had him put out since there is still no sign of books 6 or 7).

  2. I haven’t really been keeping up with this GoT sequel business but it doesn’t auger well if a production which had so many well known actors and a lot of money spent will never see the light of day, perhaps the GoT creative juices have flowed away or some persons are being precious controlling things, I’m sure it will all come out eventually.

  3. judging from the leaked production photos, it was an no-expense spared production for the pilot.

How bad does a pilot have to be for it to be deemed this unsalvageable after investing so much?

    1. Ayra was going exploring to find out what is West of Westeros. Though as the planet is a sphere she might end up in Easteros if the answer is nothing.
