ABC’s new deal for A-League & Socceroos has not generated strong results in its first outing.
A World Cup Qualifier: Australia v Nepal match could only manage 191,000 viewers last night, which was fourth in its slot. There were better results on the field where Australia beat Nepal 5-0.

A penultimate Gogglebox led from 8:40pm at 704,000 and topped the 25-54 demo. It was miles in front of its nearest competition Love Island at 240,000.
While Nine led in primary channel share Seven network won Thursday with 28.9% then Nine 26.8%, 10 22.7%, ABC 13.5% and SBS 8.1%.

It’s worth looking at the audience split between ABC and Fox for this match to get some context. As a very general rule of thumb Fox will earn around a third of the viewing audience that FTA gets for a simulcast AFL game such as Friday Night Football. So with Fox pulling 48k for this match the ABC figure doesn’t look too bad. It’s reflective of the interest in the game.
The ratings for Socceroos games will improve when they face stronger opposition. I knew what to expect from this game and couldn’t bother to tune in. Any form of sport that many fans know is going to be so one-sided has no appeal to many of us.
Remember that this is the second round of World Cup qualifiers, so naturally it is weaker opposition, but the third round is where it will get interesting as we could face arch rivals Japan in the third round. Also worth noting is this is also the second round of Asian Cup qualifiers for the 2023 Asian Cup (that’s why Qatar is competing in the qualifiers even though they automatically qualify for the World Cup) in China and if memory serves me right, the top two in each group qualifies directly for the Asian Cup. Qualifications split up after the end of the second round.
I think they should change game shows every 3mths. Sale of the century , family feud, price is right and wheel of fortune
Maybe add Pointless to that list too.
Your comment is the best one I’ve seen regarding 10’s 6pm spot.
Wow. Not good numbers for the Football (aka soccer) match. Am now worried to see what their Saturday afternoon matches will be rating.
Wasn’t the World Cup qualifier on delay outside of AEDT? Don’t think that would be helping. With that said, don’t think the ABC would be stoked about the numbers.
Yes, it was shown at 8pm local time in all areas. Was live on iView for those non-Foxtel viewers outside AEDT that wanted to see it live.
While I knew that the ABC has scored the A-League, I didn’t know of this match. Would have watched it if I had seen some advertising on an ABC station, or heard on the radio.
The next Socceroos match is on Tuesday evening (15/10). It’s on SBS Viceland, kickoff is at 10.40pm AEDT but coverage starts 15 mins earlier. I’m not sure where in Australia you are but I think this match is live nationwide.
I am almost certain that the game on SBS Viceland is live across the country. But as they say, check your local guides for details.
CNG got a run on Gogglebox this week. Wasn’t exactly a ringing endorsement.
David do you think Love Island can remain on 9 based on those numbers? Do u think if it continues that it may switch to go! Again?
I don’t see the show disappearing due to its BVOD. Whether primary channel is its natural home is a valid question and one Nine is probably looking hard at. I’d like to see a second week before contemplating a move. Things need to settle.
hi david
do you have the numbers for 9’s forgetting sarah marshall, please
many thank you’s
david
99k.
I’ve been watching CNG, but lately have been wondering who on earth is that. Their Celebrity choices are dire and very Sydney based (obviously due to location), but some I’ve never even heard of. If only Pointless could return, which isn’t going to happen. Maybe give Press Your Luck another run !!
I would dump CNG and move the project to 6pm and start Prime shows at 7pm.
10 has tried game show after game show at 6pm. It simply isn’t working. But if they were to try another game show, perhaps they can consider bringing back Jeopardy? (though that would probably lend itself better to a one hour timeslot, unless they ask fewer questions)
Jeopardy enjoyed a successful run in the 70s, and returned briefly in 1993 on TEN, but didn’t last long upon its 90s revival. Jeopardy consistently rates well quite on Foxtel (and is often in the top 20 overnight ratings), so there is some potential, but 10 needs to try something different at 6pm. CNG is intolerably vapid and has no element of audience-at-home participation, which is where it completely fails as a game show (not to mention the nobodies being passed as “celebrities”).
An Aussie version of Press Your Luck would be awesome. F
6pm is the most important timeslot, it sets up the night. 10 needs a recognizable game show there. Not a niche program that nobody has heard of. I love the American Wheel of Fortune and the new Press Your Luck is good too.
I remember Press Your Luck from the 80’s. Being a computer nerd at the time, I even programmed the game for my computer in BASIC! Bring back the whammy!!
Both 7 and 9 news at 6 regularly rate from 800K to 1 mill. It wouldn’t matter what 10 put on at 6 o’clock. Even if they moved The Project it wouldn’t rate anywhere near that…
A game show without the over the top carrying on would be better. We still watch CNG but never live – we record and play/pause and do the game ourselves.
