Birth of Metal
Thursday November 7 at 8pm
Overdriven guitars with heavy drums, bass lines working with and against guitar lines and vocals from voices at the limit of their power. In metal, everything is at 10. The 1960s flower power movement – peace and love in music no longer reflected the lives of a generation. At the same time, de-industrialisation was beginning. If you were angry, you didn’t want to change the world. You just wanted to scream. Featuring artists such as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Nazareth.
Women who Rock
Thursday November 14 at 8pm
In the ’60s, artists such as Grace Slick and Janis Joplin, were fronting A-list bands. Garage rock, all girl bands sprang up across the US in the 1960s and were playing rock ‘n’ roll on their own terms whilst breaking new ground. As rock developed in the late 1960s and 1970s alongside the women’s liberation movement, women refused to be just the pretty singer fronting a group. This episode features bands such as Heart, Suzi Quatro and The Bangles.
Songs For The People
Thursday November 21 at 8pm-
Protest songs about the conditions experienced in the 1920s and 1930s were written using traditional folk hillbilly/bluegrass traditions. Acts such as The Freedom Singers overthrowing 50s attitudes, bringing issues such as the Civil Rights Movement of the late 1950s and early 1960s into focus. This gave folk music a tremendous strength in the US creating such legends as Joan Baez, Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger.
British Metal
Thursday November 28 at 8pm-
Music offered an escape from the drudgery of real life, if not a direct route to fame and riches. They came from tough working-class backgrounds. Factory work or steel rolling were starting to vanish. At the same time, British punk was born and spread outwards, its anger and nihilistic world view the antithesis of everything that had gone before. British Heavy Metal exploded. This episode features bands such as Judas Priest, Saxon and Iron Maiden.
