Today it announced a handful of new shows as part of a strong returning slate, including upcoming drama series Informer 3838, with Ella Scott Lynch as gangland lawyer known as Lawyer X, Nicola Gobbo. It is now filming in Melbourne, also with Gyton Grantley.

Rebecca Gibney returns with Halifax: Retribution, joined by Anthony LaPaglia and Claudia Karvan.

Nine’s 2020 highlights are as follows….

New:

Informer 3838
Nine has announced a star-studded cast for Informer 3838, the new drama mini-series based on the events involving gangland lawyer turned police informer, Nicola Gobbo. Ella Scott Lynch (Love Child, Doctor Doctor, Upright) will play the gangland lawyer known as Lawyer X, Nicola Gobbo. The series will mark the return of some members of the Underbelly crew. Gyton Grantley (House Husbands, The Dressmaker, Balibo) will reprise his role as Carl Williams and Robert Mammone (Fat Tony & Co., Mystery Road, Water Diviner) will again play Tony Mokbel. Rhys Muldoon (Les Norton, Rake, House Husbands) is police informant Terrence Hodson. Also starring in the mini-series are Stephen Peacocke (Five Bedrooms, Squinters 2, Home and Away), Richard Davies (Offspring, Tidelands, Oddball), Olympia Valance (Neighbours, Playing For Keeps), Jane Harber (Offspring, A Moody Christmas, INXS) and Hollie Andrew (Fat Tony & Co., Somersault, Supernova). Informer 3838 will tell the story of how Nicola Gobbo had the ultimate trust of Melbourne’s underworld and was gangland’s go-to defence lawyer, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Carl Williams, Tony Mokbel, the Morans, the Carlton Crew and Roberta Williams. While Nicola knew the underworld’s dirty secrets, they had no idea of hers. This explosive drama is the untold story of how one woman’s secret double life helped to fight the Melbourne gangland wars and trigger a Royal Commission. Throughout the gangland wars Nicola Gobbo was the ultimate double agent. Against all the rules, she was betraying her clients to the police while defending them in court. Informer 3838 is being produced by Screentime, makers of the hit Underbelly series, with assistance from Screen NSW. Filming commenced in Melbourne last week.

Jane Halifax (Rebecca Gibney) is a rock star in the field of forensic psychiatry, and after years on the police frontline she has carved out a new career as a university professor. But when a serial sniper starts terrorising Melbourne, Jane is lured back into the field to help the police task force find the killer and save a city paralysed with fear. As she profiles a killer hidden in plain sight, Jane finds herself firmly in his view. This one is personal. Also joining the stellar cast are Claudia Karvan (Newton’s Law, Jack Irish, Time Of Our Lives), Jacqueline McKenzie (Safe Harbour, Romper Stomper, Pine Gap), Rick Donald (800 Words, A Place to Call Home, Wentworth), Craig Hall (A Place to Call Home, The Doctor Blake Mysteries, Catching Milat), Michala Banas (Upper Middle Bogan, Bad Mothers, McLeod’s Daughters), Mavournee Hazel (Neighbours, My Life Is Murder), Louisa Mignone (Secret City: Under the Eagle, Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries, Rake), Stephen Curry (The Castle, The King, Hounds of Love) and John Waters (Mystery Road, Rake, Offspring). “I am beyond excited to be breathing new life into Jane Halifax as she was and still is one of my favourite characters, and I always believed there was so much more we could explore with her,” Rebecca Gibney said. “Having grown as a woman and hopefully as an actor over the last 20 years I’m really looking forward to exploring Jane’s world from a new perspective.” Original creator and writer Roger Simpson (Stingers, Satisfaction, Good Guys, Bad Guys) returns as writer and producer, alongside executive producer Mikael Borglund. They will be looking to win a historic third straight trophy in 2020, but plenty of teams will be primed to knock them off. Fans will be able to watch and stream every one of Nine’s NRL games, across Nine and 9Now, with supplementary streams for feature matches plus blogs, highlights and social takeovers all available through the Wide World of Sports digital and social channels. State of Origin
The biggest event on Australian TV each year, State of Origin, returns exclusively to Nine in 2020. This year Game I was the most watched and streamed program in Australia, with Games II and III also in the top four. Following the huge success of State of Origin’s first match in Perth in 2019, this national sporting phenomenon will continue to make its way to new markets, with the world-class Adelaide Oval hosting Game I on June 3 next year for the first time. Games II and III will follow in Sydney and Brisbane respectively. The State of Origin rugby league series has always been a titanic mate versus mate, state versus state rivalry, and after a decade of dominance by Queensland, NSW has finally won two series in a row, thanks to a thrilling last-minute try in the Game III decider this year. Women’s State of Origin will also return in 2020, following a record TV audience – and a record crowd – for this year’s game in which NSW defeated Queensland. With a proven track record for excitement and an audience reach of 10 million Australians across the series, State of Origin will be must-see TV in 2020.

The women’s World Cup commences on February 21, with the men’s World Cup starting later in the year, on October 18. The Australian women will go in as hot hometown favourites, fielding a team packed with superstars of world sport including Ellyse Perry, Alyssa Healy and Meg Lanning. The final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground will be a great opportunity to set a new world record for attendance at a women’s sporting fixture. The Aussie men will be fired up after a great showing at this year’s ODI World Cup – and also retaining The Ashes – and they rank among the favourites to win the trophy. Both the ODI World Cup and The Ashes proved to be huge ratings successes for Nine, breaking records and featuring some of the most gripping finishes to cricket matches in history. Still to come in 2019

Hamish & Andy’s “Perfect” Holiday
Hamish & Andy love holidays. In fact, they have been taking holidays together and pretending it was work for ten years now. Caravan of Courage saw them traverse the UK and the USA, and Gap Year took them on an adventure through Europe, Asia and South America. In this proud tradition comes Hamish & Andy’s “Perfect” Holiday, and for the inaugural trip, North America has been selected for its diversity, beauty and, if we are honest, the oversupply of eccentricity. But organising a big holiday is hard, right? So Hamish & Andy will divide and conquer, planning half the trip each, choosing what they think will be the “perfect” activities for each other. But one person’s perfect can be another’s repulsive. In true Hamish & Andy style, this trip will see them once again uncover the bizarre and embrace the unknown as they treat each other to the “perfect” holiday.

ARIA Awards
The ARIA Awards will again be broadcast on Nine, on Wednesday, November 27, 2019, LIVE from The Star in Sydney. Hosted by four-time ARIA Award winner and coach on The Voice, Guy Sebastian, the prestigious ARIAs are the flagship event on the Australian music calendar. Representing the pinnacle of music success, the year’s best and most popular acts are recognised in front of their peers and fans.
John Farnham, Crowded House and INXS were among the original winners in 1987, and since then the ARIAs have been a star-studded affair, attracting top acts from around the world. This year, the 33rd ARIA Awards will be no different as the best local talent plus international superstars take the stage and another Australian music legend is inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. The ARIA Awards are produced by ZigZag TV for Nine.

Both team captains have selected eight players so far, with their last four picks to be made in the coming weeks. Nine’s broadcast will be headed up by James Bracey, with Wayne Grady, Alison Whitaker and Stuart Appleby commentating on play and Todd Woodbridge roaming the course to bring viewers all the big stories from the tournament.

Nine’s Upfronts list is highlights only, and does not include US titles nor multichannels. However absent from the list are:

Seachange (Nine: “We are still in negotiations and don’t have confirmation at the moment”), Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation, This Time Next Year, Bad Mothers, Love Island (no decision yet given it has just returned), Murder, Lies & Alibis, 20 to One, Australian Crime Stories, Millionaire Hot Seat, Getaway. There is also no details regarding any replacement for The Footy Show.

This post updates.

  1. I asked a lady who works at Nine here in Melbourne and she told me the network isn’t going to record Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation anymore. Because of its low ratings on Wednesdays it looks like. I also asked if there will be a Footy Show revival, the woman said she’s hearing whispers of a Grand Final show only. No word what is replacing The Footy Show.

  2. The shows I am looking forward to are – Emergency, New Episodes of Paramedics from Victoria, New RBT episodes from South Australia minus the New South Wales repeat episode they will add on to it and I really wish Channel 9 would stop doing it, not holding my breath though! I am also looking forward to the NRL / State Of Origin coverage, Channel 9 does a great job with it. The rest will be the news, 60 Minutes and A Current Affair for the laughs and the Australian Open.

      1. Thanks David, I couldn’t read the whole story because I don’t have my glasses lol. So it hasn’t been ruled out completely then. I suspected when the reboot of SeaChange was first announced that it may not be as successful on a commercial network. It was a wonderful show in its day and I enjoyed the reboot, but I’m not overly confident ☹️

  3. It be interesting if Hot Seat dose’nt return next year, its time Nine has another show in the 5pm slot. Mabye The Price is Right or even something new like a quiz show would fit well, Temptation anyone?

  4. Intrigued to see if Jacqueline McKenzie is going to be reprising her AFI & Logie winning role as Sharon Sinclair in ‘Halifax’ or if she is playing a different character?

  5. I can’t remember any other time in history where the upfronts from 9 and 10 have been so beige. No wonder people are turning away from FTA, there’s nothing here that interests me. At least the rumours suggest 7 will come up with something exciting.

  6. I watched the entire Upfronts live on 9Now (pretty much 2 hours) and for those wondering about Millionaire Hot Seat, it was briefly mentioned via the long sizzle reel near the end with no voiceover mentioning it by name.

I am hoping something else replaces the 5:00-6:00 weekday timeslot and Millionaire comes back to primetime with the current UK format (Eddie would be interesting to see as the Ask The Host lifeline)
Something like 2 episodes a week for a brief period every few months or they could really go full event mode and do something like 10 nights in a row per series.

  7. So David I guess this means no Big Brother on Nine, so does that mean Big Brother is confirmed and is going to Channel 7.?? And I was waiting for the big announcement they said, I don’t even know what was the big announcement to be honest, what was it.? Very disappointing..

    1. Big Brother is not confirmed for Channel 7 at this point.
Channel 9 could still use ‘right of refusal’ powers to prevent them making a series. But at this point (5 full years since a series was made) Endemol Shine should make 9 produce a series in 2020 or make the rights an open bidding process. (likely 7 winning them)

  8. Shame there’s nothing mentioned about a fourth channel or GEM or GO becoming HD ,I think all FTA networks will not add another HD channel unless it’s actually legislated.

    1. Think of the effort to redit, to make them look fresh, umm perhaps not. I often see the Early news on 7 and they show the same stories from the night before….

    1. My exact thought! How is that allowed to be a show? Sounds like it’ll be terrible for parents to watch & only encouraging people to be judgemental about the parenting styles of others. The world doesn’t need any more encouragement to add hate & judgement into it. I really hope it isn’t a hit as it should never have been considered as a show concept.

        1. There were ads broadcasted on Channel 9 for a few days about Tipping Point, but it since disappeared.

An article online mentioned that Nine are going to test Tipping Point during the Non ratings period at the end of the year. We’ll see what happens.

  9. Not a lot of surprises here… but they have a good slate so why rock the boat! Looking fwd to a lot of their shows. 9 + 10 the only channels I watch tbh!! 7 better do something this year, haven’t actually watched a thing on channel.

  10. ‘In 2020, it will be the only weekly public affairs program on commercial television.’ Not so nice from 9 Considering how hard it is for the team at Sunday Night to have their program axed. Also Would be good if they announced Seachange for another season, great Australian drama that deserves to live on.

  11. Why wasn’t Doctor Doctor on this year? they finished filming it ages ago and why can’t they renew it even though the fourth season hasn’t been on yet

    1. I think they had enough drama points for 2019 and potentially were confident with their ratings success to hold it off for next year and perhaps also save money by filming another season in 2020 to show in 2021.
