UK reality series Race Across the World begins on Nine next week (it looks chilly!).

Not to be confused with ABC’s former Race Around the World hosted by Richard Fidler.

Nine as are cheekily referring to the travel contest as “more than amazing.”

According to Wiki:

The programme follows pairs of competitors racing around the world to be the first to reach their destination, starting from London and finishing in Singapore.

The competitors cannot fly but were each given an amount of money equivalent to a one-way plane ticket to their final destination of £1,329, which they can use to travel by land or sea. The money pays for all the cost of the travel including food and accommodation, but they may work to earn money along the way.

The competitors may not have any mobile electronic devices or credit card at the start of the race, but were given a world map, a GPS device to track their progress, a travel guide with local job adverts, in addition to the money.

In every episode, the teams were given a checkpoint they had to reach. One team may be eliminated if they come last at a pre-determined checkpoint. At each checkpoint, the racers were given a 36-hour break.

The first team to reach Singapore win a cash prize of £20,000.

The six part series is narrated by actor John Hannah and aired in the UK in March.

  1. This is very low key but in a good way, but does not fit the Nine brand at all. It’s very reminiscent of early reality TV, avoiding being over produced and scripted. Basically they get a start and finish point for each episode and almost complete free reign how to travel behind them. The only notable production influence is that each team is provided with details of possible jobs along the route as they have to earn their travel costs rather than win them in challenges.

  3. I watched this entire series and was expecting a British Amazing Race, which it is not. However, it’s done very well, more documentary style than ‘reality’ we are used to but this makes it great. You really warm to the teams and the premise of no air travel makes for some interesting journeys on this show. The Brits have done well here and already commissioned a second series. The producers said the journey they took before filming was tough and not sure if teams could do it!

  4. Yes, I’ve been waiting to watch it tis show since it first aired in the UK in early 2019!

    It’s been described as the British version of The Amazing Race, so I am looking forward to watching it!

  5. I saw segments of this on Gogglebox UK, it was no Amazing Race. I’m surprised Nine even bothers with this, thankfully they are doing it now and not next year to create viewer fatigue in travel competition shows.
