SBS to screen Mardi Gras Live in 2020

Exclusive: Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras parade returns to a Live broadcast in 2020.

EXCLUSIVE: Break out the sequins, TV Tonight can confirm SBS will screen a Live to Air broadcast of the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras parade in 2020.

Josh Martin, Commissioning Editor of Entertainment, revealed the news this week at the Screen Forever conference.

SBS has previously offered live stream at SBS On Demand ahead of an edited version the following night. Foxtel has also previously screened Live broadcasts.

The technical challenges around a Live parade telecast are significant, not just around sound, but the gaps that occur in between floats bing somewhat unpredictable. Producers Blink TV have previously offered some great showcases of community groups to highlight preparations and community involvement.

This year 10 was a participant with a Neighbours float, to celebrate celebrate the marriage of Aaron (Matt Wilson) and David (Takaya Honda). Next year ABC will also have an entry, funded through donations.

UK pop singer Dua Lipa has been announced as the headline act for 2020. The official theme for next year’s festival is What Matters.

  1. I think a live broadcast on television is beneficial for the Mardi Gras as it will attract publicity and viewers, and beneficial for the event partners and sponsors. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in America had been arranged for live broadcast so that could be a precedent for a live Sydney Mardi Gras broadcast.

  2. Hopefully with live commentary too. In past years, the SBS live stream has simulcast Joy FMs coverage. That was lacking this year which was very disappointing.
