What to expect from SBS Upfronts

Here's a hint of 2020 shows in the final Free to Air Upfront presentation this year.

SBS Upfronts tomorrow afternoon is the last in a long line of Free to Air presentations this season.

SBS always presents a hefty and diverse slat to advertisers and media, now across 5 separate channels, meaning this could well be its biggest ever. And that doesn’t include SBS On Demand. The challenge for the broadcaster is to achieve it on the smallest of all network budgets.

Local drama Hungry Ghosts and 6 part travel series Great Australian Railway Journeys  were all due in 2019 but will now air in 2020. Same goes for international dramas The New Pope and the final season of Homeland.

Eurovision: Australia Decides is due in February and the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras parade will air Live to air. Eurovision in Rotterdam will be held in May. Mastermind is also expected to return.

In international dramas will be more of The Handmaid’s Tale, Vikings, The Good Fight and Fargo is also back in 2020 with Chris Rock set in 1950s Kansas City. There will be many more, but not all will be broadcast on air.

The factual slate will be large. Casting for more Medicine or Myth has been underway. Filthy Rich & Homeless, Australia in Colour and Untold Australia are also tipped to return.

Expect news on Blackfella’s doco series on addiction and Wildbear’s docos on the turbulent history of Australians in the air. ITV Studios has a doco series which follows migration lawyers and agents.

Will we hear any news on Who Do You Think You Are?, Struggle Street, Marry Me Marry My Family, Every Family Has a Secret? Will there be more Slow TV over summer?

And it wouldn’t be SBS without more Food and Sport highlights.

On SBS VICELAND expect more of The Feed, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Orville, South Park.

NITV has Warwick Thornton’s 6 part doco series The Beach, a third season of Perth reality series Family Rules and probably more of kid’s series Little J & Big Cuz.

SBS Upfronts take place after midday tomorrow.

TV Tonight will be Live tweeting ahead of a highlights wrap.
