2019 Boxing Day Test: guide

New Zealand will come out swinging on Boxing Day when they meet Australia at the MCG.

Seven’s coverage of the Boxing Day Test between Australia and NZ at the MCG will be hosted by Mel McLaughlin and James Brayshaw.

Alison Mitchell, James Brayshaw and Tim Lane are callers with commentary from Ricky Ponting, Glenn McGrath, Damien Fleming, Simon Katich, Michael Slater, Brendon McCullum and analysis from Trent Copeland. Emma Vosti is reporter.

New Zealand will come out swinging on Boxing Day at it bids to draw level with Australia in the three-match trans-Tasman series, with all the second Test action from the MCG live and free on Seven.

Australia beat the Kiwis by 296 runs in the first Test at Perth’s Optus Stadium, but the winning margin belied what was a fierce contest, with the visitors blasting the Aussie batsmen with a sustained barrage of short-pitched bowling.

New Zealand will be determined to rise to the occasion in Melbourne too, as it makes its first appearance in the iconic Boxing Day fixture for 32 years. And with star veteran Trent Boult expected to return from injury and partner fellow quicks Tim Southee and Neil Wagner, the Black Caps have the firepower to trouble Australia’s top order, with the world’s best batsman Steve Smith sure to again be their key target.

The Aussies won’t lack firepower either, however, with hometown tearaway James Pattinson set to replace the injured Josh Hazlewood and form a lethal pace trio with Mitch Starc and Pat Cummins.

The battle for the Trans-Tasman Trophy culminates in the New Year’s Test at the SCG from January 3-7, while Seven’s Test coverage this summer, including the two-match Australia-Pakistan series, has already reached 10.88 million people nationally and 7.47 million in metro areas.
