Call for Entries: WIN News Scholarship

The WIN Network has announced a new scholarship program in partnership with The Walkley Foundation, which highlights the role of broadcast journalism in regional areas.

Comprising a 12-week, full-time program, an aspiring journalist will gain first-hand newsroom experience while sharpening their broadcast industry skills and learning from established and passionate industry experts.

WIN News Network News Director Stella Lauri (pictured) said, “While there is much the Federal Government needs to do, in terms of changing archaic laws to secure the future of broadcast regional news, this scholarship is WIN Television’s message to the media industry, it has a strong belief in telling the stories that matter in regional areas.

“WIN News has provided a solid foundation to graduates for more than 50 years and is proud to be partnering with the prestigious Walkley Foundation to continue fostering journalism in this country.”

The WIN News Scholarship will be open to outstanding students in their final year of university studies, or recent graduates aged 26 years or under. The successful applicant will complete a minimum six-week period based at WIN News in Wollongong, with an option to complete the remaining six-week period at one of the following WIN regional news centres.

• Sunshine Coast
• Hobart
• Shepparton

The recipient of the WIN News Scholarship receives a stipend of $10,000 to cover the 12-week duration.

  1. some WIN TV Staff, have been telling anyone who will listen that WIN NEWS is not dead in the regional markets that lost their news earlier this year, and that big changes will happen when the next round of affilation agreements are done. Maybe this is WINs way of of starting recruitment.

    1. WIN has always worked with the Uni of Wollongong to train students and give them hands-on experience in producing pieces locally and working with their network newsrooms, and experiencing and working on every aspect of a news bulletin from sourcing to shooting to editing to captioning to broadcast. It’s a boost for morale when an aunt phones from Cairns to say “OMG I just saw you on WIN News reporting that (national interest story)”. And WIN’s All Australian News is still the only commercial news program reporting on regional nationally.
