Kay McGrath to depart Seven News

End of an era coming for Seven News Brisbane presenter.

Seven News Brisbane presenter Kay McGrath has announced her departure, ending a 40 year run in Australian television, the time is right to pursue other passions.

She told the Courier Mail, “It’s something I have thought about for a long time, it’s not a decision I’ve made lightly – it’s the end of a decade and it’s more than 40 years.

“There is a lot of change going on in the industry, there has been change in my life, I have had other opportunities come in since stepping off the Monday-to-Friday newsdesk and it just seems like the right time to transition into another challenge.

She will be replaced by Katrina Blowers, 43, a senior reporter and presenter who has been with the network for eight years.

McGrath’s final weekend news bulletin will be next month.

  1. She was treated so badly by BTQ7. Kay built 7 Nightly News then 7 News up to be the dominant news in Brisbane. QTQ9 was a distant 2nd and had no chance to topple 7 with Kay McGrath at the helm. But then some idiot came in with great plans. Demote Kay and Rod to Friday and Saturday nights and give Sharyn Gidella the top job Sunday to Thursday with Bill Macdonald (?) Why mess with something that was number1 and unbeatable? I reckon it was corporate sabotage. Because what was done was totally unnecessary.
On a sad and eerie note my best friend Clinton Lake was Kay McGrath’s biggest fan. He died recently and his funeral was yesterday. I’m glad he neher got to see her leave 7 but I wish he was alive to see her jump ship to 10 News First.

  2. I moved to Brisbane when I was 18, and Kay had already been reading the Seven News for some time. I’m now 52 and she’s only just leaving, so she’s been there my whole adult life, and I’m going to miss her. Kay is such a warm, professional and compassionate newsreader. Fortunately she is going to be filing special reports, so we’ll still see her occasionally.
