New Year’s Eve broadcast to raise funds for Red Cross

New Year's Eve will be a time to pull together for those in need as well as for celebration.

ABC’s New Year’s Eve broadcast for the City of Sydney will partner with the Australian Red Cross to raise funds for victims of bushfires, droughts and floods.

Hosts Zan Rowe and Charlie Pickering will be driving the callout for donations as they host our Party of the Decades concert, live from the Sydney Opera House, starring some of Australia’s top performers. Soulful singer-songwriter Marlon Williams, the Cruel Seas Tex Perkins, Augie March guitarist, singer-songwriter Glenn Richards, American rapper Aloe Blacc, rock chick Natalie Foster, Jazz bassist Steve Kilby and legendary musician Russell ‘The Real Thing’ Morris are all on board.

They will join previously announced artists, Kate Miller-Heidke, Phil Jamieson, Vika and Linda Bull, Angie Hart, Mojo Juju, Adrian Eagle and Casey Donovan as they perform the memorable songs from recent decades. From the rock-n ’roll classics of the 60s, to the high tempo disco hits of the 70s and present-day classics – the hits will keep coming.

But before they rock the main stage, families can enjoy the New Year’s Eve House Party with music, games and dancing! Hosted by Susie Youssef and Nazeem Hussain and featuring performances from Baker Boy, Regurgitator and Shonen Knife, this New Year’s Eve show will have everything you need to get the party started from the comfort of your own home. Expect celebrity appearances, some of your favourite ABC Kids and ABC Me stars and a countdown that will travel the country before the fireworks light up the sky in celebration at 9pm.

Funds raised on the night will enable Red Cross to continue its important disaster relief and recovery work, giving people the support they need in emergencies, including the bushfires and disasters yet to come. The Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund currently includes recovery programs, practical support and emergency grants in communities affected by the recent bushfires.

  1. Cancellation of NYE fireworks would be a big disappointment for all the tourists who are coming to Sydney. I think already tourists avoid Sydney because of bushfires and air quality in the city.

      1. It’s definitely Steve Kilbey of The Church, who is a rock bassplayer,. not a jazz muso. He does play a Fender Jazz bass, though – maybe that’s why the confusion.

  2. Should keep a state by state tally and use it to raise money for the various animal shelters around the country. Goodness knows they need it, especially with all the dogs that freak out and bust out of their homes when the fireworks are going off.

  3. I think fireworks should be fazed out and replaced with laser light shows, far more spectacular in my opinion. The fireworks industry could retrain and be involved.

    1. Trouble is, at this late stage, they are a done deal…They work on them all year…will be setting them up over the next week….but I agree …more smoke added to what we already have…a worry for me.

    2. I agree, it costs millions, and the same fireworks companies make a fortune every year. So much can be done with lights, water, and computerised graphics on large surfaces, much more visually exciting.

  4. With our country literally burning I think all fireworks should be banned this year. Given how dry it is at the moment lighting up the skies with burning embers seems very stupid

    1. I agree. I don’t think the fireworks should be going ahead at all. Imagine how the people who have lost everything in the fires must be feeling about the fireworks

  5. Red Cross tend to use funds raised for what ever event they want to …I prefer, at this time, to donate where I know it will go direct to current fire victims…and fire fighters.
