Sunrise v Today: A tale of two promos

While Sunrise goes for fun, Today takes a more serious approach.

Sunrise and Today both unveiled 2020 promos in the last few days.

While Sunrise goes for the fun factor, Today takes a more newsy approach. For the record I also went looking for a News Breakfast one….

Which promo do you prefer and will it make you tune in?

Both teams are back on Monday January 6.

  1. Instead of watching breakfast shows, I get up, have breakfast brush teeth, go to the gym/campus. Sorry, but I can’t stand 9 v/o guy. His voice is enough to mute My TV.

  2. The Sunrise promo is much better. Every time I check out Sunrise they have some radical right wing person yelling/giving an opinion. Which is fine we all get an opinion but I don’t have to watch it.

  3. Why is that channel 9 voice over guy who sounds 85 yelling at me like it’s the end of time in a Star Wars parody trailer from SNL

    It’s so dated

    Teririble promo

  4. If you check out the YouTube channel Comedy Oz (used to be Today Show Funny Bits) They’ve put their own twist on the Today show promo making it look less stuffy and newsy. The Sunrise promo is the same, Footage of Kochie and Sam smiling at each other mixed with joyous viewers winning something followed by a massive crowd yelling Sunrise to the camera.

  5. Love Sunrise . Sam and Kochie have chemistry plus. Kochie and Karl both have the ability to go from clown to serious but Kochie does it better. Karl is a great journo, has charm but needs someone to keep him under control. Alison is a good choice and along with Karl, Today will definitely improve this year.

  6. “Breaking news, its going to be a 30 degree heatwave in Sydney today”. Whoopie don’t worry about it being over 40 degrees in other parts of the country. This is practically a daily occurrence these days on both shows repeated every 15 minutes. I used to be a loyal viewer but not anymore, it drives me crazy. I will have a look at Karl and co on the 6th though and see how it goes. Sunrise must be a bit worried constantly showing their ad.

    1. Yeah – for ease of reference here is a simple ranking system of whats “important” on FTA TV news:

      1. A tree blows over somewhere on the leafy eastern or north shore suburbs of Sydney
      2. Bushfire smoke or a bit of rain floods some streets in inner Sydney or Melbourne
      3. Scandal or cross promotion of a same network reality program
      4. Some sports star says or does something controversial.
      5. Someone famous from Hollywood comes to Sydney to give an interview and plug their latest film.
      6. Large scale natural disaster in outback/regional Australia
      7. Lost dog/burnt cat/injured animal human interest story
      8. Latest health study disproves previous dubious health studies about chocolate or wine.
      9. Something spectacular footage captured somewhere in the USA
      …….
      100.. Millions of people in Africa/Middle East/Asia die in civil war/disease outbreak/famine.

  7. I jumped the gun and commented before watching the Sunrise one too. Well there’s no comparison, the Sunrise promo kills Today. Feels way more fun, warm, natural, good track playing, that voice over guy isn’t on it and the established 4 presenters are all there adding to it. Don’t watch either shows by the way.

  8. All about Ad revenue nothing else both awful shows the times we have tuned in..why bother..listen to the radio for proper news, instead of pumped up overrated overpaid Prima donnas!

  9. If it was a choice between the two I tend to watch the Today show, but only briefly if nothing major has happened. The tele is then switched off and the radio is on. I did find the Today promo rather dull. Why not tackle the elephant in the room and create a promo poking fun at themselves.

  10. Definitely Sunrise, love the light hearted show, we have enough Newsy programmes and most of it is depressing, also the news is repeated numerous times over and over again saying the same think during the day across all channels so if you miss it once you can see it a second, third and forth time.

    1. Agree with you. Both shows make me cringe. The fact that I am a regional viewer stops me from being interested in their news updates. Always Sydney based IMO. And as for their segments they bore me to tears. Give me the ABC anytime.

  11. Well nobody could suggest the two shows are a clone of each other based on that. It’s a very conservative old-school approach from Nine though.

  12. really hoping that Nine use a new set for Today, as for the promo, I don’t think Nine have the budget for a big Today promo and after the failed recast this year I’m sure they want to make the change subtle or as subtle as possible
