US actor René Auberjonois, best known for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Benson and Boston Legal, has died aged 79.

The cause of death was metastatic lung cancer, according to family.

Auberjonois portrayed Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, for its seven-season run in the 1990s. He appeared in Boston Legal, a spinoff of The Practice, for five seasons between 2004 and 2008. On Benson he played Clayton Endicott III over 6 years.

There were numerous other TV credits: Ellery Queen, Family, Grey’s Anatomy, The Rockford Files, Charlie’s Angels, Starsky & Hutch, Wonder Woman, Harry O, The Jeffersons, The Outer Limits, Night Gallery, Hart to Hart, Matlock, Murder, She Wrote, The Bionic Woman, Frasier, Judging Amy, Chicago Hope, The Bob Newhart Show, Star Trek: Enterprise, Stargate SG-1, Warehouse 13, Archer, L.A. Law, The Practice, Saving Grace, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Criminal Minds, NCIS, The Good Wife, The Librarians, and Madam Secretary.

He also acted in theatre and film, notably as Army chaplain Father John Mulcahy in Robert Altman’s 1970 feature M*A*S*H.

Fellow Star Trek actors William Shatner and George Takei reacted to news of his death on Twitter, with Takei calling him “a wonderful, caring, and intelligent man.”

“He shall be missed,” Takei wrote. “When I look out to the stars, I shall think of you, friend.”
