Golden Globe Awards 2020: winners

Winners: Succession, Chernobyl, Fleabag & Russell Crowe.

Adult themes

Succession, Chernobyl and Fleabag were big winners in the TV categories at the 77th Golden Globe Awards today. Each won two awards.

Russell Crowe won for The Loudest Voice, which became one of several moments to shout-out to Australia in the midst of bushfires.

Crowe was not in attendance. He sent a message advocating climate change action.

“Make no mistake, the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change based,” he said.

“We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place that it is. That way, we all have a future.”

Australian bushfires were mentioned several times, including by Ellen DeGeneres (it was the first acknowledgement she made), Cate Blanchett (calling out to volunteer firefighters), Patricia Arquette, Pierce Brosnan and a somewhat rambling Joaquin Phoenix.

But the night for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association began with host Ricky Gervais again delivering some brutal one-liners, noting it was his last hosting so he didn’t care anymore….

  • “I came here in a limo tonight, and the license plate was made by Felicity Huffman. I feel sorry for her daughter. That must be the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to her. And her dad was in Wild Hogs.
  • “This show should just be me coming out and saying, ‘Congratulations, Netflix, you win everything.’
  • “We were going to do an In Memoriam, but when I saw the list, it wasn’t diverse enough. I said no, not on my watch.”
  • “Tonight isn’t just about the people in front of the camera. In this room are some of the most important TV and film executives in the world. People from every background. But they all have one thing in common: They’re all terrified of Ronan Farrow.”
  • “Talking of all you perverts, it was a big year for pedophile movies. Surviving R. Kelly, Leaving Neverland … The Two Popes.”
  • “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, nearly 3 hours long. Leo attended the premiere and by the end his date was too old for him. Even Prince Andrew was like ‘Come on.’”
  • “The world got to see James Corden as a fat pussy. He was also in the movie Cats, but no one saw that……Judi Dench said it was the role of a lifetime because she loves nothing more than plonking herself down on the carpet, lifting her leg, and licking her own minge.”
  • “Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. Accept your award, thank your agent, and your god, and f*** off.”

Ricky Gervais also closed the show saying, “Please donate to Australia.”

  1. The irony about GG 2020 comments from celebrities like Russel Crowe or Patricia Arquette is in the Ricky Gervais monologue where he is talking about celebrities using the platform to make political comments when they are not in the position to do so and the small ‘l’ liberal culture within Hollywood.

Celebrities somehow think their political views are more valid than the butcher, baker, candle maker, draper, hairdresser etc. down the main street of town.

    1. Do you really believe that? Celebrities have a platform… of course they are going to use it.
A lot of them actually express the public sentiment well I think. Something has to be done about climate (Russell) and Trump is dangerous (Patricia)

      1. Gervais has been critical of Trump before so I think his GG criticism is fair and honest. The political speech criticism was the context before the Greta quote. I think it’s not so much the platform, but the arrogance of some celebrities. There are more factors than just climate change for the tragedy, but they went unmentioned. I’m not going to go into the issues or politics in-depth to avoid going off-topic.

  2. Phew ?,so glad The Irishman left empty handed ,I’ll never get those 3 plus hours back and I’m sorry I just couldn’t see where all the 140M went.
