Justin Chambers departs Grey’s Anatomy

Original cast member, who plays Alex Karev, to exit after 16 seasons.

US actor Justin Chambers has announced his departure from Grey’s Anatomy after 16 seasons.

Chambers, who plays Alex Karev, is one of the few remaining original cast members alongside star Ellen Pompeo, James Pickens Jr. (Richard) and Chandra Wilson (Bailey).

“There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years. For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time,” Chambers said in a statement. “As I move on from Grey’s Anatomy, I want to thank the ABC family, Shonda Rhimes, original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, and the rest of the amazing cast and crew, both past and present, and, of course, the fans for an extraordinary ride.”

US media report his final episode has already aired, having screened in mid November.

Grey’s Anatomy screens in Australia on the Seven network.

  1. The way they got rid of George in season 5 was a classic.
The actor was making waves behind the scenes so the producers threw him under a bus.
    Literally.

  2. He’s 50 or almost 50….that’s nuts!

Alex was Meredith’s secondary person and as everyone else is saying married to Jo. Seems like a messy storyline this one.

I know a lot of people weren’t amused with Sara Ramirez’s exit but at least it worked.

  3. Seriously shocked by this. Can’t believe Meredith is losing another person 🙁 Plus the fact he may have filmed his last episode already too and that was his send off (I won’t spoil) but that was really disappointing not to know.
