Foxtel prison drama Wentworth has been voted the Australian Show of the Decade according to TV Tonight readers.

The reimagining of classic Aussie drama Prisoner has screened since 2013 with intense storylines and dazzling performances from its ensemble cast, attracting international fans and spawning remakes in 4 European countries. Twenty more episodes are currently being filmed in Melbourne to screen across 2020 – 2021.

Original cast member Danielle Cormack who played Bea Smith for 4 seasons said, “I’m sure I speak on behalf of everyone involved with the production of Wentworth by saying a giant thank you to TV Tonight and your readers for this honour.

“There is so much time, heart and creative energy poured into this show, so for it to be loved by so many, means the world to all involved.”

The Logie and AACTA winning drama landed well ahead of the competition with 10 panel comedy Have You Been Paying Attention? securing second place and ABC’s bittersweet Josh Thomas comedy Please Like Me as third.

Recent titles understandably dominated, and there were several non-scripted titles included by readers: Australian Survivor, Gogglebox and Hard Quiz.

  4. I watched at least one season of 10 of those shows, but only 3 of them did I tune into every season. Not a fan of Wentworth, for a number of reasons, but I do see how it would’ve reached the imagination of today’s audience.

    1. To borrow a phrase: “Do yourself a favour”. Up to S6 atm. I’m of the generation that was just too young for Prisoner the first time (AFAIK it’s only been repeated the once on FTA and I saw some eps then) but I’m thoroughly enjoying Wentworth

  9. Well deserved win for Wentworth. Since the very first episode, I’ve salivated and eagerly counted the days to the next. It’s been bold enough to kill off primary characters without wasting them and still give thrilling drama with heart and humour. I’ve loved every second.

  10. Wow, no Doctor Doctor, House Husbands, Winners & Losers or 800 words. I must be the only person in the country not watching Wentworth. Just never interested me. Was too young for Prisoner back in the day. From what I hear about it it’s pretty violent.

    1. The dramas you have mentioned I have watched and enjoyed but I consider are your middle of the road dramas for a wide audience. It seems TVT readers love shows of a different kind and all five of mine appeared many of which (the dramas) had storyline’s that resonated with me.

    3. and doctor doctor is an excellent series and wentworth. compare them stupidly doctor doctor is a comedy and a bit of drama. and wentworth drama and humor a bit.

All five of my selections are in there ?Good on Wentworth for taking top notch but I am secretly happily that Please Like Me was third. Currently watching again thanks to another TVT reader who prompted me to binge the four seasons…but I just don’t want it to end…
