“All you can be in your life is honest with yourself”

UK presenter Phillip Schofield comes out in a frank TV admission, drawing high praise from colleagues & public.

UK presenter Phillip Schofield has announced he is gay in a social media post and frank discussion on This Morning.

Schofield, 57, paid tribute to his family, co-presenter Holly Willoughby and ITV.

“With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact I am gay,” he said.

“It’s tough but this is not something that’s happened quickly, I’ve had to deal this in my head for quite some time,” he told Holly Willoughby.

“I got to the stage where I thought we sit here, every day, and some amazingly brave person is sitting over there and I’m thinking ‘I have to be that person’.

“All you can be in your life is honest with yourself. I was getting to a stage in my life where I was thinking I don’t really like myself because I’m not being honest with myself.”

Schofield received glowing support on This Morning and in social media posts from David Walliams, Matt Lucas, Gok Wan, Armistead Maupin, Dawn French, Peter Andre, and more.

  1. Hangover from the bad old days…really bad days….that he felt he had to wait until now…
I hope the rest of his life is happy and free, as we all deserve….To thine own self, be true!

  2. I grew up watching Phillip in the Broom Closet (kinda ironic now I think of it) with Gordon the Gopher, then on to Going Live and beyond. He’s always been such a dignified gentleman and this coming out was so very much ‘him’. I have nothing but respect and admiration for him finding his truth.

    1. Me too! I lived in the UK until I was 12 and have such fond memories of watching Phillip and Gordon the Gopher on Children’s BBC after school. In fact, I had something of a boyhood crush on Phillip!
All the best too him, he’s a very lucky man to have such an understanding family.

  3. I have spent many hours watching the “funny” moments from This Morning, Holly and Phillip are an incredible duo and you know their friendship is true, their families have holidayed together.

Phillip is an incredible presenter and always comes across as warm and supportive. This must have been very hard for him to come to terms with and admit, but good on him for living his true life. I wish him and his family all the best moving forward.
