MAFS walk-out tops Monday

Ratings: Volatile storylines in Reality TV. A low night for SBS. Did Nine just kill off Hot Seat in Adelaide?

Married at First Sight lost its first couple for 2020 last night as Poppy quit the series, leaving tearful TV groom Luke with no option but to also depart.

The show again topped the night and the demos at 1.09m viewers.

If it was challenged by anything it was the return of Australian Story at 725,000 viewers for ABC, followed by 7:30 (660,000), Australian Survivor (613,000) and a volatile My Kitchen Rules (500,000).

But the switch-off after MAFS was significant. Reality aside, Four Corners led after 8:30pm with 774,000 then Media Watch (689,000), 9-1-1 (458,000), Nine movie: Bad Moms (309,000) and Hughesy We Have a Problem (279,000).

Nine network won Monday with 29.7% then Seven 26.0%, ABC 20.0%, 10 18.1% and SBS 6.2%.

Nine News drew 870,000 / 861,000 for Nine then A Current Affair (749,000) and Hot Seat (440,000 / 245,000). But moving Hot Seat to 4pm in Adelaide saw the show attract just 4,000 and 3,000 viewers -down from last Monday’s 27,000 / 19,000. Nine’s Afternoon News, now in the 5pm slot in Adelaide, drew 14,000 across both last Monday and last night.

Seven News won its slot with 974,000 / 965,000 for Seven. Home & Away (600,000) and The Chase (567,000 / 374,000) followed.

ABC News drew 704,000 for ABC. Elsewhere Q&A was 410,000 and The Drum (183,000).

The Project pulled 509,000 / 303,000 for 10. 10 News First (352,000 / 250,000).

SBS was low all night with Expedition with Steve Backshall (128,000), Michael Mosley: Trust Me I’m a Doctor (125,000), SBS World News (112,000)

NCIS on 10 BOLD topped multichannels at 178,000.

  2. Like I said in the twilight grand final thread, sometimes The Chase beats the 7:30pm shows and here it has in one half by 67,000 so again a pity those aren’t considered part of primetime ratings.

  3. Now that the US Survivor is back on (and what an exciting 2 first eps it was) the Australian Survivor version is looking creaky by comparison. It was completely pointless to send Shonee and Zac to Exile Island only to put them back in the game immediately. Usually people on Exile have an extended stay and then compete to be the only returnee. I suspected this the last couple of seasons as well: producers manipulating vote outs to keep someone in the show for their own purposes. In this case Shonee who has been heavily promoted in ads as the one to watch, along with Matt and David. Luckily I can get my proper Survivor fix with the US version.

    2. i saw on twitter from the guy that does the Survivor au podcats that production got an extra episode or something? hence the no elimination or need to fight back. not sure on the truth to that though, was a bit pointless. should of at least done a puzzle with winner getting to choose the tribe they want to join

    3. I agree that the US series is already sensational. They realy need to send someone to Australia to show them how a 1 hour episode every week is all you need with the right production & editing. Au usual Australian tv thinks quantity is better than quality

  4. I’m liking the tweaks to Q&A this year along with Hamish. The panelists are a little more vulnerable as there’s no desk to hind behind and Hamish is a genial and smart presence and host. Those numbers are pretty good considering time slot and heavy night of ABC content.

  5. Why dont nine try something a little bit better than dumping a movie after mafs. They should do a local version of cheaters! I bet that would keep the audience lol

  6. If Seven is going to claim anything this is the first episode this year that reached half a million (oztam overnights) when head to head against MAFS. That’s akin to Today claiming a one day win Melbourne.

  7. I don’t understand Ten & Nine’s blocks of news. Yes, the 6pm bulletins are consistently amongst the top rating shows each night, but news from 5 – 7:30pm and 5 – 7pm respectively is lazy programming. It seems news is the new Big Bang!
