Renewed: Avenue 5

Armando Iannucci's sci-fi comedy has been renewed for a second season.

New sci-fi comedy Avenue 5 has been renewed for a second season.

“We’ve loved every minute of Avenue 5‘s inaugural voyage,” said HBO Programming executive vice president Amy Gravitt. “(Creator) Armando Iannucci and his team are masters of smart and incisive comedy, and the ensemble cast, brilliantly captained by Hugh Laurie, is second to none. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for our hapless heroes in season two.”

Hugh Laurie stars as Captain Ryan Clark aboard a cruise ship in space. The cast also includes Josh Gad, Zach Woods, Rebecca Front, Suzy Nakamura, Lenora Crichlow, Nikki Amuka-Bird and Ethan Phillips.

“It was so great to be back again with HBO for the first season of Avenue 5, so I’m doubly thrilled that HBO have now seen fit to put Captain Ryan Clark and his passengers and crew through even more physical and emotional hell next year too,” said Iannucci. “Nobody provides angst-ridden laughs better than Hugh Laurie, and we’re looking forward to seeing what further impossible situations and existential crises we can plunge him, Josh Gad and the rest of our fantastic cast into next. To the end of season one and beyond (into season two)!”

Hugh Laurie added, “It’s thrilling to discover that space isn’t finite after all. I’m very excited to be continuing on this journey with Armando and HBO, and also an amazing group of actors and writers who make me laugh every day. Here’s to the future.”

Avenue 5 airs in Australia on FOX Showcase.

  1. I did predict this would happen and you have to say ‘it could only happen in America’.
To my mind this show was already earmarked for two seasons as a minimum order, the money was invested for that purpose and actors like Hugh Laurie would have signed up expecting a 2 season deal.
Next year we will see just what genuine potential Avenue 5 has but then I remembered the UK’s low budget sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, look how long that show has lasted.

    1. But look at how much more funny and interesting the first 5 seasons of Red Dwarf were (with a fraction of the budget).

HBO’s model is do a minimum 2 seasons, because it takes time and money to develop a replacement. But they have pulled the plug when shows are this bad during production of S2 e.g. Here and Now, so it wasn’t a sure thing. I watched 2 eps, and wished that I hadn’t.

  2. Really…? Ok then.

This is so far the biggest disappointment of 2020. And I suspect will go close to still being at the top of that list at years end. Geez what a mess of a show…
