Returning: Secrets of Our Cities

Secrets of Our Cities with Greig Pickhaver returns to SBS on Sunday, with the first episode looking at the Gold Coast.

Two more episodes will follow this series with Footscray, Vic. and Kalgoorlie WA.

SBS continues to unearth the secrets of some of Australia’s most iconic cities and suburbs in the second instalment of Secret Of Our Cities.

Over three weeks, Australian icon Greig Pickhaver will travel to the Gold Coast QLD, Footscray VIC, and Kalgoorlie WA to uncover their hidden histories and meet the unsung residents who’ve helped shape these iconic places.

Season Two, Episode One: Gold Coast
The Gold Coast hides a past full of bitter struggle and huge enterprise. Greig explores how South Sea Islanders suffered brutal treatment to enable the early sugar boom in the 19th century, and how it was post-war migration that led to the Gold Coast’s hedonistic years of bikinis, meter maids, and pyjama parties. Greig meets Maori Showband members, who transformed the nightlife with their cultural beats, and an Iranian architect who saw a world of opportunities in a coastline of construction cranes.
