Vale: Kay Stammers

Pioneering news presenter Kay Stammers who worked in news & current affairs for Seven, Nine and 10, has died, aged 72.

She died following a battle with cancer.

Stammers served as a newsreader, presenter, reporter, producer and health & medical specialist across multiple networks including as presenter for Seven’s Newsworld in the 1980s.

She was a pioneer of women’s television journalism, starting in Melbourne with Mike Willesee and later working alongside Jim Waley, Ian Ross, Robert Penfold and Peter Harvey as the first female reporter on Nine’s Sydney news team.

She also worked as health & medical reporter for 10, consumer reporter for Burke’s Backyard, Arts reporter for ABC on State of the Arts, Billboard, TVTV, Executive Producer of Language programs for SBS and was an inaugural parenting presenter / producer for Foxtel’s LifeStyle Channel.

A published author, she also wrote five non-fiction books, including “What They Never Tell You”, on surviving the first six months of parenthood.

Seven’s Ann Sanders told TV Tonight, “Saddened to hear of the passing of Kay Stammers, who was a gracious lady and talented journalist. Her children’s book Tilly and Mrs Tweddle was a favourite in our house. Sincere condolences to her family.”
