Axed: Messiah

Story ends incomplete at just one season, possibly a victim of too many global locations.

This is quite annoying…. Messiah has been axed by Netflix after a single season -meaning viewers won’t get answers to the mystery questions it raised.

Aussie Wil Traval shared the news on Instagram, writing, “It’s a very sad day today. I have just received news from Netflix that there will be no season 2 of #messiah I wanted to say to all the fans thank you for your support and love. I wish things were different.”

Variety suggests Netflix did not feel confident producing a show that required so many international locations given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

It also had other Aussie ties including writer Michael Petroni, who also co-executive produced along with Mark Burnett, and director Kate Woods.

The series followed CIA officer Eva Geller (Michelle Monaghan), who uncovers information about a man (Mehdi Dehbi) gaining international attention through acts of public disruption. As he continues to cultivate followers who allege he’s performing miracles, the global media become increasingly beguiled by this charismatic figure.

The cast also featured John Ortiz, Sayyid El Alami, Dermot Mulroney, and Beau Bridges.

  1. Sense 8 had many locations too, but Netflix continued this somewhat esoteric series to its end.
Baring in mind that any number of series may be in danger of cancellation because of COVID-19, ‘Messiah’ may have been a bit too provocative especially in the USA.
You have to admire Netflix’s independent approach to providing streamed entertainment, especially to a global audience, so hopefully no outside influences provoked Messiah’s cancellation and Netflix’s diversity of genre will continue.

    1. That’s what I would have thought too. I was really looking forward to season 2, season 1 was the best new show i’ve seen in sometime. I’m getting a little frustrated with Netflix cancelling shows I enjoy.
