Axed: The Magicians

US fantasy series is ending at five seasons.

US fantasy series The Magicians is ending at five seasons.

Season 5, currently screening in the US, will conclude there on April 1st (no foolin’).

The series centres on a group of 20-somethings as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures.

In a statement Syfy said, “The Magicians has been a part of our Syfy family for five fantastic seasons. As we near the end of this journey, we want to thank John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Henry Alonso Myers, Lev Grossman, and our entire brilliant cast, crew, writers and directors for their beautiful creation. But most of all, we thank the fans for their tremendous support and passion. Because of you, magic will be in our hearts forever.”

It has previously screened in Australia on Syfy, although Season 5 is yet to commence.

  1. The Magicians has done its dash story wise, the current ambiguous story arc was getting tiresome, and dare I say needed some new original sub plots, fresh actors and some charisma to liven the show up a bit.
For me the musical interludes, which I guess in recent times have become an American thing to reveal those hidden talents of the stars, was the jump the shark moment.
The Magicians did fill a need for fantasy fans, so hopefully the gap it leaves by its ending will not remain for long.

    1. I’m not sure I’d be overly optimistic of an air date here, given it aired in line with the US last year whilst it was still under the auspices of NBC, however it is almost at the end of its US run without any sign of an air date here. Given the SyFy was not a Foxtel-run channel, it is possible they’d also need to specifically purchase the program, which given no further series are forthcoming seems unlikely, particularly as I don’t believe the Foxtel-run SciFi channel airs any new content.
