Bruce McAvaney honoured with Lifetime Achievement at Quill Awards

Legendary sports broadcaster honoured at Victorian journalism awards.

Legendary Seven Sports broadcaster Bruce McAvaney was honoured with the Melbourne Press Club Lifetime Achievement Award last night at the Quill Awards.

McAvaney thanked his Channel 7 colleagues – both in front of and behind the cameras – for their support throughout his extraordinary career to date.

“It’s a huge honour and a bit daunting when you see who has come before you,” he said.

“At my stage of life it does cause you to reflect on the last few decades, the great support you get as part of a broadcasting team and how to make the most of the time ahead.

“But truly, I feel like a very lucky kid who’s had the opportunity to fulfil a dream.”

ABC News, 7:30, Seven News, Nine News, A Current Affair and The Project were amongst other winners.

Hugh Nailon, Director of Nine News Melbourne, said: “I’m enormously proud of the hard-working and talented members of the Nine News team recognised tonight. These awards are a reflection of the fine television journalism our entire newsroom strives to deliver each day.”

For the first time in the award’s history, judges have awarded the Gold Quill to a photographer. Michael Willson of AFL Media was recognised for his iconic photograph of AFLW player Tayla Harris.

    1. Congratulations Bruce. I always hoped he jumped over to reading the news Monday to Friday. He is so personable and credible. Not that I am a 6pm news watcher anymore I would make an effort to watch him. Peter Mitchell needs to go, or has he? I’ve only seen another guy (who’s name escapes me) whenever I happen to catch 7news Melbourne. I like him better. But if there is going to be (early) evening news for me it’s our Jen on 10 News First. Love her.
