Call for Entries: ABC Takeover Melbourne

Year 10 students across greater Melbourne (and those of equivalent age outside formal education) are invited to enter ABC’s Takeover Melbourne Competition.

Winners will work with ABC producers to have their story featured on the ABC.

Takeover Melbourne creates a powerful platform for young Melburnians to be heard and to share their experiences, challenges and passions with the rest of the city. Thirty-two winners will have their stories featured locally and nationally on the ABC and will attend the Takeover Melbourne Summit – a week of leadership development and money-can’t-buy experiences, empowering them to design a brighter future for their city.

City of Melbourne Lord Mayor, Sally Capp, said the Takeover Melbourne Competition has the power to help young people shape the futures of their city.

“We want to provide opportunities for Melbourne’s young people to amplify their voice and support the development of engaged and diverse young leaders who want to make a difference in their communities.”

“We want to provide opportunities for Melbourne’s teenagers to get involved and share the things that are important to them with the rest of Melbourne,” the Lord Mayor said.

Director of ABC Regional and Local, Judith Whelan, said the Takeover Melbourne Competition would empower young people to speak up about important issues.

“The ABC is opening its doors to the younger generation, to make sure their voices are heard and taken seriously on issues that affect them. Takeover is an exciting opportunity for the ABC to engage with communities across the city.”

“We are looking forward to seeing Takeover Melbourne provide real opportunities to the young people of Melbourne,” Ms Whelan said.

VicHealth CEO Sandro Demaio said it’s important to give a diverse range of young people a platform to share their strong views.

“Young people will inherit our city and the many challenges we’re currently facing, so it’s critical they have the opportunity to voice their ideas and concerns,” Dr Demaio said.

“Young people are already stepping up around the world and creating change on key issues including health and climate change. Takeover is a great opportunity to hear from a range of local young people about their ideas to make Melbourne a healthier and more sustainable place to live.”

Entries can be submitted via the Takeover Melbourne website: abc.net.au/takeover. The Takeover Melbourne Competition officially closes on 26 June 2020.

Takeover Melbourne is a partnership between the ABC, Resilient Melbourne, VicHealth, the Centre for Multicultural Youth and the 32 local councils of Greater Melbourne via Resilient Melbourne.
