Daryl Somers ends legal wrangle over radio report

Showbiz report leads to bitter stoush and weeks of legal negotiations.

Daryl Somers has ended a legal fight with showbiz reporter Peter Ford and 6PR radio presenter Basil Zempilas over a December radio report.

In December Peter Ford told 6PR’s Breakfast with Steve Mills & Basil Zempilas that Daryl Somers had been fired from hosting a Ballarat Carols by Candlelight for ‘diva demands’ including a furnished marquee as a dressing room, having Plucka Duck perform, his own music director, make-up artist, and running up a hefty bar tab.

But Somers claimed the details were untrue while the Ballarat Carols organising committee issued a statement that the former Hey Hey host pulled out for personal reasons.

Yesterday the Herald Sun reported the matter had been resolved after legal demands, with both Ford and Zempilas issuing an apology.

“There were a lot of false allegations made against me and I thought ‘Not this time. I need to get to the bottom of this,'” Somers told the newspaper. “It came down to a full and unreserved apology.”

On social media Peter Ford said he was glad the matter was over after lengthy legal negotiations.

  1. Daryl’s reputation far precedes him, whether it be comments on the public record about backstage antics on “You’re Back In The Room”, Red Symons spilling on Daryl’s slipper bells or Jo-Beth Taylor’s comments on “I’m A Celebrity” (which interestingly were backtracked in a similar fashion to this). Thus, it is very easy to believe Peter Ford here.

Also interesting that Daryl went after Basil, when (as I recall listening live here in Perth) he was far more complimentary to Daryl than Steve Mills was. Daryl just after a high-profile scalp perhaps?

  2. If my memory hasn’t failed me, I’m pretty sure it was Peter Ford who got really snarky that Shapelle Corby had the hide to evade the media on her way back to Australia. He kept saying she would have to do media but in the next breath gloated that she’d never get paid for it because of the “can’t benefit from crime” legislation. Never thought much of him after that. Why would she do him (or any other media) a favour to make money off her when they had trashed her so much, especially for no money?

    1. Hello OnTheEdge. I am sorry you have such a low opinion of me -most especially when you happily admit you aren’t sure of your details. I have no recollection of any such commentary. Cheers

    1. Yeah, no actual remorse for what he’d said coming through in that statement.

Based on what was said, Daryl had every right to initiate legal proceedings, and he got the outcome he deserved. Ford is sounding like he was the victim.
