MAFS discovers “certain standards” as Nine wins Sunday

Ratings: Extreme relationship show boots couple as it claims moral high ground. MKR beats DWTS.

Married at First Sight bizarrely took the moral high ground last night telling two participants it had standards and booted them off the show.

It all emerged after Hayley voted to “stay” on the show despite friction with TV husband, David who voted to “leave.” Arguments and accusations ensued, in which Hayley admitted wanting to stay out of sheer spite. The soap opera antics drew a cool 1.18m viewers.

Grand Designs, from 7:40pm, was next in the slot at 518,000 then My Kitchen Rules on 482,000, beating Dancing with the Stars for the first time on 410,000 (417,000 later was elimination).

60 Minutes was high at 902,000 ahead of ABC’s Stateless premiere at 441,000, The Good Doctor was 331,000 then Michael Palin In North Korea (257,000).

Nine network won Sunday with 34.8% then Seven 22.6%, ABC 17.3%, 10 16.1% and SBS 9.3%.

Nine News drew 838,000 for Nine. Released to Kill Again was 418,000.

Seven News was best for Seven at 902,000. God Friended Me drew 162,000.

ABC News was 706,000 for ABC. Tea with the Dames was 320,000.

The Sunday Project pulled 362,000 / 212,000 for 10. 10 News First drew 239,000 and The Graham Norton Show was 201,000 and Bondi Rescue was flat at 137,000.

On SBS it was Secrets Of Our Cities (223,000), SBS World News (161,000) and Inside North Korea’s Dynasty (132,000).

Bluey led multichannels at a high 193,000.

  1. DWTS should just stick to the original format & whoever scores the lowest they just get eliminated. Last year we had the dance off, which just extended the show and now we have 2 judges decided and if they can’t Craig has the final say.

Last night of course Chloe was always going to get chosen over Ryan.

I flicked between that & MKR. Then I remembered how that show is strategic & annoying. I just want to see good dishes.

  2. I was in the audience for DWTS last night. Best thing I’ve done in ages. Watching how it all comes together and how polished it is was brilliant. Seeing Amanda and Grant was the highlight. I’m saddened by the ratings. It deserves better.

  3. Ten needs to get bondi rescue off the main channel and ether start the project at 6pm then reality at 7pm or try something else at 6pm what ever the did couldn’t rate worse than bondi rescue does

  4. I was channel hopping and ended up watching MAFS at the point when the pictured couple got booted. Now seems they have gone full Jerry Springer – the contestants seem a new level of low with extreme emotional issues. And some seemed drunk, especially the guy who was red in the face and whose eyes were unfocused the whole time. Can’t comprehend why it is rating so highly.

I have watched segments of DWTS but it can’t hold my attention for a whole show. Think its had its day and I don’t know many of the ‘celebrities’ anyway.

  5. Those “standards” don’t get any lower than MAFS. Don’t understand how people watch but it is their choice if thats what they want to do. I choose to do other things with my time. I think honestly though the standard of Australian tv is at an all time low. There really isn’t much exciting on anymore. They blame streaming services but that has nothing to do with it. We want quality tv shows. Why do you think MKR is at an all time low. People are over it. MAFS will end up like it one day too. All i watch these days on FTA is US TV shows (mostly dramas) and Survivor along with AFL and some other sports.

      1. To which the Free To Air Channels have likely painted themselves in a corner now.

We’re at the point where Netflix and Amazon Prime are looking to make Australian Shows (Stan are already) and Apple will also likely follow suit one day, so I see by the time FTA gets there again the availability of Actors will be low as they’re making “original” shows for the streamers.

  6. Another brilliant DWTS last night. Why it’s not rating better has me scratching my head. Maybe the start time and end time is the problem. Anyone else got some thoughts?

    1. It’s not helped by being a bit of a tired format. It ran for a long time on seven and I don’t think people really had a chance to miss it before 10 picked it up and it was back. It’s a shame though, as you say, 10 have done a really good job with it and it’s deserving of better figures than it’s getting

      1. Also I would say that 10BOLD is pulling some of the older audience away from DWTS, as they have NCIS and Land Order: SVU up against it and that audience grew into that routine last year.

    2. I’ve watched the first DWTS for 2020 on catch up, fantastic production and Ten have really given new life to the format, problem is, there ain’t enough genuine ‘Stars’ to go with the dancing.
Ten needs to whip out the check book like it does for Celebrity and pay $1.000.000 for one really big name to be apart of the season.

    3. People under 40 are watching MAFS (and some MKR) and people over 40 are watching Grand Designs. Along with some news and current affairs. I recorded GD and some of the dramas and will watch them later in the week. So read a book.

  7. There are no standards on MAFS, it’s all part of the theatre/drama. If there were standards David will have been ejected from the show as soon as the producers knew the video was available (ala Big Brother Turkey Slap incident).

    1. that was in response to viewer feedback from last year. As dramatic as it was, they did the right thing, removing the ‘miscreants’ rather than allowing them to hang around.
