Michael Rowland: “We are so proud”

Michael Rowland sent a blunt message to those who criticised weatherman for appearing at Mardi Gras.

News Breakfast host Michael Rowland sent a blunt message to social media users which criticised weatherman Nate Byrne for appearing in the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.

Byrne appeared with colleagues on an ABC float, funded by donations, alongside Managing Director David Anderson and cheered on by Chair Ita Buttrose.

“Nate was the subject of some disgusting, some disgraceful, homophobic comments which we think are just appalling here on News Breakfast. We are so proud of not just Nate but all of our colleagues, Fran Kelly, Patricia Karvelas, Annabelle Crabb -everybody who took part…. not just on the ABC float, but (those) who turned up to support the ABC. It’s a great initiative and those people who sent those messages can go back under their rocks, this morning.”

  1. Agree that Michael Rowland is an excellent journalist and host – in fact the whole ABC News Breakfast team are really strong and they all ‘jell-together’ as a group incredibly well. There is a real chemistry and respect between the news, sport, weather, and finance lead presenters. For those that want a slightly ‘harder-edged’ and commercial-free breakfast show, this is certainly the place to go in the mornings now.

  2. Good on you Michael. I don’t follow social media so don’t read the toxic gloop. The ABC has always been LGBT+ friendly and it’s great to see them have a float. I’d have taken part if they’d had a float during my two decades working there.
