Nine News, MAFS win for Nine.

Ratings: A live PM press conference disrupted schedules but delivered a win to Nine News.

No doubt bolstered by a live PM press conference, Nine News pulled a rare #1 last night at 1.37m -its best number in 2 years.

That beat out Seven News at 1.33m, where a press conference screened much earlier for the Perth audience (and disrupted schedules everywhere).

Married at First Sight followed with 1.16m at 7pm.

Ben Cousins: Coming Clean won its slot in Perth (791,000 in preliminary figures) from around 7:30pm then Dancing with the Stars (623,000 a season high) and Grand Designs NZ (527,000).

60 Minutes drew 1.02m ahead of The Latest (673,000) and Stateless (409,000).

Nine network won Sunday with 35.1% then Seven 25.6%, ABC 17.3%, 10 16.4% and SBS 5.6%.

Later a COVID-19 Nine News special for Nine was still high at 854,000.

ABC News was high at 1.00m. Compass drew 316,000 in preliminary figures and Shetland was 194,000.

DWTS winner announced was 635,000 for 10. The Sunday Project was 466,000 / 371,000 for 10. 10 News First was 432,000. The Graham Norton Show was 262,000 in preliminary figures.

On SBS it was Secrets Of Our Cities (202,000), SBS World News (191,000) and North America With Simon Reeve (146,000). A doco named Contagion drew 82,000.

Bluey topped multichannels at an impressive 370,000.

Some shows will be adjusted following Live press conference.

  1. Dancing did pretty good with only half its cast last night. The show was building in Sydney in the end and it did well in Melbourne and they leave with their heads up high with 623, and with regional and catch up they will get to one million across the country.

    1. Agreed. Overhyped & under delivered.

There was nothing new last night & Seven knew it, yet continued to sell it as ‘explosive’

This was nothing more than exploiting someone with serious health & mental issues

  2. I’m so sick of channel 7 at the minute. They’re just destroying everything at the moment. No wonder viewers have flocked from the network. The schedule is all over the place. Being made up as they go. First part of a two part finale for The Good Doctor and nothing 🙁 Any idea when it’s going to air David?

    1. Yesterday all networks were impacted by PM press conference and broadcasting clearly has a role to inform people. Next episode is 8:30 Sunday at this stage. Viewers are also indicating they want news, at the same time as others indicate they want entertainment.

  3. We missed out on Claudia first dance in regional Vic. Win had an extended ad break and came back just as Claudia was receiving her judges comments. Rather annoying as she got a perfect score

    1. I mean kind of makes sense. There was a 2min recap of the press conference by Chris Uhlmann and that was it. Makes sure all states in the same time zone line up for MAFS at the same time, and consequently for 60mins live special later on as well.

  4. I can see why you skipped the paragraph on 7, David. Their schedule was all over the place. I waited & waited for The Good Doctor and presume it did not screen?

  5. I mostly enjoyed this season of DWTS. They did their best despite the circumstances! Anyone else feel the Grant and Amanda chemistry was a bit off this year? I wonder if 10 will commission another series or risk a new show for better ratings? Survivor and Masterchef are doing All Stars but I’d like to see a DWTS version, lots of celebs to pick from!

    1. I doubt it’ll get another season. Little improvement in ratings from last year so a third season would be unlikely to fare much better. And if it did air early next year Craig Revel Horwood may have to be out, even if things are relatively back to normal here international travel may still not be a possibility. Second half of next year he could probably come here (and the show might perform better against softer competition late in the year) but then it may clash with this other commitments such as Strictly Come Dancing.

  6. You are funny David ‘no doubt bolstered by The Prime Minister’s press conference’….good grief even in these bad times I avoid his press conferences !!

  7. Would be fascinating to read an interview with one of the network’s schedulers, especially at a time like this and if it indeed drags on for months. I’m sure different scheduled in different markets don’t make things easier! Wonder what really happens across the network behind the scenes when a press conference (for example) breaks into programming, does the play-out facility have permission to dictate? Or do they need to call a scheduler or programmer? Or liaiaise with producers or maybe the news department?

Nine, although dropping half their news bulletin, went to air almost seamlessly. Seven, deciding to give viewers the full planned bulletin, had their entree night mucked up,
