Robert Hughes denied parole

NSW State Parole Authority decides former Hey Dad! star presents an "unacceptable risk to community safety."

Former Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes has been denied parole.

The NSW State Parole Authority deemed he presents an “unacceptable risk to community safety.”

Hughes has held dual Australian-British citizenship and had been approved for the International Transfer of Prisoners scheme, meaning he would have remained in prison in the UK and supervised on parole until 2025.

But 3 months ago he cancelled his ITP application and renounced his Australian citizenship. Therefore, if released on parole he would be deported immediately and not supervised in the UK.

NSW and the UK only have reciprocal arrangements for prisoners, not parolees.

The NSW SPA decided he represented an unacceptable risk and also denied him an automatic review of the decision.

In 2014 Hughes was sentenced to 10 years and 9 months imprisonment, with a 6 year non-parole period.

He cannot be reconsidered for parole until 2021.
